Job description

Pay: $65.00/hour

This position will perform MRI procedures as requested by the ordering providers through established protocols, policies and procedures. The role also involves patient care as a member of a multidisciplinary team consisting of radiologists, radiology residents, radiologic technologists, and nurses.

Nature And Scope

Provides MRI imaging to patients of all age groups, from newborn to geriatric. Interacts with patients, their families, physicians, hospital staff, and other departments.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Identify each patient and review their information for consistency of exam ordered, clinical diagnosis, prep and all demographic information.
  • Assess all information and factors that may contraindicate the exam, such as medications, insufficient preparation, etc.
  • Screen all patients for ferrous and RF‑sensitive materials and prosthetic devices before they enter the MRI magnetic field. Ensure that the safety screening forms have been completed and check for contraindications.
  • Utilize all safety devices on equipment to ensure the safety of the patient and technologist.
  • Review the patient’s chart and physician’s request to determine optimal imaging parameters for suspected pathology. Select appropriate image coils and protocols for each exam and revise patient position or imaging parameters as needed according to established guidelines.
  • Determine the appropriate amount of contrast agent based on the patient’s age, weight and requested procedure. Administer contrast agents according to established guidelines and monitor the patient during injections for infiltration or reactions, notifying the radiologist and paging emergency response if required.
  • Provide accurate explanations and instructions to the patient, significant others and healthcare providers, addressing questions and concerns regarding the procedure.
  • Respond to questions about MRI risk factors, verify consent and ensure the patient understands risks, benefits and alternatives.
  • Assess and monitor the patient’s physical and mental condition before, during and after procedures, administering first aid or CPR in emergencies, and documenting any issues.
  • Reformat images and perform special 3D imaging as needed.
  • Notify the appropriate healthcare provider when immediate clinical response is required based on findings and patient condition.
  • Send all images to PACS with all relevant documents and archive to data storage devices per standards.
  • Send images to Nighthawk service per established standards.
  • Report all equipment failures and safety problems.
  • Maintain controlled access to the MRI magnetic field.
  • Conduct daily QA and equipment warm‑up per established standards.
  • Achieve proper hospital performance and productivity standards as established.
  • Perform other duties that support customer service needs, such as answering phones, greeting and escorting patients, administrative and clerical duties upon demand (entering orders, obtaining lab results, printing CDs and reports, scheduling appointments, obtaining referrals).
  • Respond to emergent and urgent patient and operational issues.
  • Cover part or all of other shifts and/or be on call as needed.
  • Obtain necessary certifications required by regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in teaching programs and in‑service education programs to train faculty, staff and students in CT and MRI procedures.
  • Enter and retrieve data from the hospital’s and department’s information systems.
  • Clean equipment, inventory supplies, and restock as needed.
  • Engage in educational activities to enhance knowledge, skills and performance.
  • Provide healthcare services with respect for the patient’s dignity and age‑specific needs, acting as an advocate for patient rights.
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics and Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attend annual and periodic mandatory HIPAA Privacy training.
  • Participate in activities that promote federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Actively participate in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients, families and staff, adhering to HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.

Minimum Requirements

Must be a registered technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Must have at least two (2) years’ experience as an MRI technologist. Must be certified as an MRI technologist.
