Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC seeks an experienced MRI Technologist to perform high-quality MRI procedures for patients of all ages. You will work with radiologists, residents, technologists, and nurses to advance clinical care, teaching, and service with a focus on safety and patient comfort.

The role requires ARRT MR or ARMRIT registration, CPR certification, and at least 2 years of MRI experience, with knowledge of anatomy and MRI terminology.

Qualifications

  • Registered MRI Technologist – ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT registration required.
  • Certification as an MRI Technologist.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Minimum of two years' experience as an MRI Technologist.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and MRI terminology.
  • ALARA principles when operating equipment.
  • Strong communication and independent judgment.
  • Ability to lift moderate to heavy loads.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain MRI equipment to produce high-quality images.
  • Monitor patient condition before and after the scan for safety and comfort.
  • Set scanner settings and exposure as directed by the physician.
  • Perform contrast administration based on patient factors.
  • Explain the process to patients to provide comfort and care.
  • Notify healthcare providers for urgent findings.
  • Troubleshoot scanner and equipment; conduct daily QA and warm-ups.
  • Participate in teaching and in-service education programs.

Job description

Role Summary

Bring your imaging expertise to one of the nation's premier academic medical centers. Howard University Hospital – the nation's only teaching hospital located on the campus of a Historically Black University and a designated DC Level 1 Trauma Center – seeks a skilled MRI Technologist to join our Radiology team in Washington, DC. In this role, you'll perform high-quality MRI procedures for patients of all ages, from neonatal to geriatric, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, residents, technologists, and nurses to advance our mission of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and service.

What You'll Do
  • Operate and maintain MRI equipment to produce high-quality images for accurate patient diagnosis
  • Monitor each patient's condition before and after the scan to ensure their safety and comfort
  • Apply appropriate technique and shielding, and program the scanner to the proper settings and exposure as directed by the physician
  • Perform venipuncture and operate the power injector per department and manufacturer protocols, determining the appropriate contrast dosage based on patient age, weight, and requested procedure
  • Address patient concerns and explain the process throughout the exam to provide comfort and ensure the best possible care
  • Notify the appropriate healthcare provider when procedural findings or patient condition require an immediate clinical response
  • Troubleshoot the scanner and equipment to minimize downtime, and conduct daily QA and equipment warm-ups to established standards
  • Participate in teaching and in-service education programs for faculty, staff, and students in magnetic resonance imaging procedures
Required Qualifications
  • Registered MRI Technologist – ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT registration required
  • Certification as an MRI Technologist
  • Current CPR certification
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience as an MRI Technologist
  • Working knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy of the head, thorax, and abdomen, physiology, and MRI terminology, practices, and procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to ALARA principles when operating equipment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to exercise sound independent judgment
  • Tact, courtesy, and poise in caring for anxious patients, and the ability to remain calm in a high-stress environment
  • Ability to lift moderate to heavy loads and stand for extended periods

Position Details
  • Department: Radiology – MRI
  • Reports To: Radiology Manager
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
  • Bargaining Unit: Local 2094 (Grade 2094-29)
  • Schedule: Full-time; primarily day shift, with evening and night coverage as needed
  • Weekend Requirement: As needed
Pay

This position is covered under the Local 2094 collective bargaining agreement (Grade 2094-29). The base pay range is $37.05–$59.30 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications per the Local 2094 wage scale. Additional compensation may include a night shift differential for qualifying evening/night shifts and a weekend differential for qualifying weekend shifts.
