The MRI technologist performs MRI procedures and related techniques to produce diagnostic images for physician interpretation. This role may require flexible hours, alternate shifts, weekends, and on-call duties to ensure quality patient care at assigned sites. Flexibility in hours/shifts may be necessary to support department needs. The technologist works as part of a multidisciplinary team and performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs procedures or examinations under the order of a licensed medical practitioner for diagnostic interpretation.
- Prepares patients for procedures.
- Maintains knowledge of current MRI safety practices and utilizes such practices daily, assuming responsibility for persons entering Zones I-IV.
- Provides patient instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
- Applies principles and policies of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risks to patients, self, and others.
- Reviews patients' clinical history to ensure appropriate scans are ordered and labs are within range, reviewing with radiologists and/or providers as necessary.
- Selects and operates MRI systems, surface coils, physiologic gating devices, and associated equipment to achieve desired results.
- Reports and documents MRI safety incidents/adverse events per protocol.
- Positions patients and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting patient safety and comfort.
- Immobilizes patients as required for examinations.
- Selects appropriate pulse sequences considering established protocols and data acquisition factors.
- Starts and maintains intravenous access, including power-injectable ports and specialized lines.
- Assists with medical record/image sharing as necessary.
- Operates MRI scanner and associated equipment to produce cross-sectional images of patient anatomy for diagnostic purposes.
- Documents all pertinent MRI procedure information in electronic medical records, including medication reconciliation.
- Verifies consent and screening forms for all entering Zone IV.
- Prepares and administers contrast media orally and intravenously, maintaining aseptic technique.
- Assists physicians with interventional procedures.
- Provides practical instruction to students and partners.
- Evaluates images and data for technical quality.
- Manipulates and reconstructs digital data for display, ensuring proper identification.
- Performs high-level MRI studies independently, including cardiac, run-offs, device protocols, and procedural studies.
- Assumes responsibility for the physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
- Uses radiology information systems (including PACS), completes required records and reports, archives, and submits images for review and interpretation.
- Initiates basic life support actions when necessary.

Education & Experience
Graduate of an accredited radiography or MRI training program. 1-3 years of experience preferred, but new graduates will be considered.
Certification/Licensure
ARRT Radiography registration required if ARRT (MR); ARRT MRI or ARMRIT registration required (or must be obtained within two years of hire). CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.
Additional Requirements
Driver's license and background checks as applicable. Must follow written and oral instructions.
