Job summary

Job description

Hours: Part-time - 20 hours per week


Shift: Various shifts


Major Responsibilities:


  • Determines appropriate MRI technique and positions patient using immobilization and support devices to ensure optimum image quality

  • Positions patient and adjusts equipment, immobilization and support devices as necessary, using tact and courtesy at all times

  • Determines appropriate MRI technique based on anatomy and patient’s condition to obtain quality images to provide Radiologist with a diagnostic tool.

  • Secures history from patient regarding reason for prescribed test and records on appropriate form for Radiologists information.

  • MRI safety standards will be adhered to and strictly enforced.

  • Help in daily operations of ordering and stocking supplies


Operation of advanced and sophisticated state of the art MRI equipment and PACS


  • Assists Radiologists with biopsy and specialty procedures requiring additional experience and knowledge.

  • Prepares MRI rooms for procedures and maintains equipment as required.

  • Ability to troubleshoot MRI and PACS equipment and communicate appropriately before equipment becomes a major breakdown.

  • Handle MRI equipment and coils with care to prevent damage

  • Contact service in the event of equipment breakdown


Delivery of patient care and a “Service First” approach in accordance with departmental standards of continued quality improvement


  • Coordinates the flow of patients into and out of the department in accordance with established departmental procedures. Transports patients into and out of department when necessary.

  • Participates in team problem-solving issues that would improve patient care, department operations, inter-departmental relationships and employee satisfaction.

  • Maintains positive customer relations following prescribed department policies

  • Assumes leadership role in absence of manager or coordinator to ensure continuity of department operations

  • Is self-directed in securing supplies and equipment for the department.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills by answering questions from various hospital personnel, coordinating patient flow, and communicating with other technologists. Prioritizes emergency requests, expedites emergency room procedures for Radiologists interpretation, collects and distributes related paperwork.


Participates and assists the coordinators and manager with image quality activities.


  • Participates and recommends changes that would improve image quality.

  • Participates in the department Performance Improvement data collection.

  • Assumes an active role in assisting the coordinators communicate optimum image quality to technical staff.

  • Alert Radiologist of any and all life‑threatening pathology


Ensure a secure and safe patient and work environment by maintaining continued awareness of safety hazards


  • Adheres to safety practices and provides a safe work environment for self and others by properly screening all personnel, associates, patients and families.


Development of leadership skills and professionalism for self through participation in department and/or hospital‑based committees and continuing education programs


  • Attends to personal work schedule in a consistent and professional manner.

  • Demonstrates self‑direction by identifying learning needs and establishing self‑development activities.

  • Completes all development goals and departmental in‑services and competencies, within timeframe

  • Attends and participates in department meetings

  • Works independently while maintaining adaptability and flexibility for change

  • Identifies problems and takes steps toward resolution.

  • Assumes a leadership role in providing instruction and direction to students participating in the clinical program and helps evaluate performance.

  • Provides instruction and direction to Technologists in the performance of specific related duties.

  • Provides in‑services to the technical staff in order to maintain technical competence


Education/Experience Required:

ARRT certified -This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, ie., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:


  • Ability to work independently and able to perform most sophisticated and specialty procedures with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to operate most MRI equipment. Demonstrates knowledge and confidence in performance of radiology procedures.

  • Demonstrates good teamwork and cooperation with internal/external customers.

  • Good communication skills. Demonstrates leadership abilities.

  • Licensed Radiographic Technologist by the IEMA -CPR certification -ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) eligible. 1 yr MRI experience


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


  • -Ability to communicate with patients.

  • -Ability to adjust to flexible work hours.

  • -Ability to work weekends, holidays and emergency call‑back.

  • -Ability to participate in the “on-call” program and available to department needs with minimal notice. -Ability to do light, medium or heavy lifting. LIGHT: Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. MEDIUM: Lifting up to 20‑50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. HEAVY: Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.

  • -Ability to make independent professional decisions using good judgment skills. -Ability to practice high-quality patient care and technical competence.

  • -Ability to function with minimal assistance in performing job activities.

  • -Ability to demonstrate oral and written communication skills.

  • -May be exposed to hazardous chemicals such as film processing chemicals.

  • -Ability to attend out‑of‑town site visits to view equipment.

  • -If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.
