Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for positioning and immobilization of patients and technical factors.
  • Responsible for obtaining and documenting patient’s history and statistics.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards and protocols related to patient care.

Skills

Basic knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and usual MRI procedures
CPR Certification
MRI Certification preferred or within 12 months of hire

Education

2 years radiology or MRI program graduate
ARRT or ARMRIT certification

Major Responsibilities
  • Accountable for the positioning and immobilization of patients and proper selection of technical factors along with computer reformatting of acquired data to obtain magnetic resonance scans procedures of optimal quality.
    • Initiates IVs for administration of contrast media for MRI enhancement in accordance with departmental policy and utilizing universal precautions in the process.
    • Archives images onto optical disks.
    • Follows MRI workflow including networking of images to PACS and verifying studies.
    • Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient and procedural basis to provide optimal quality examinations.
    • Performs post‑processing of computer data to enhance data and image information.
    • Operates support equipment for MRI, such as: independent workstation, additional disc drives, pressure injector, PACS.
    • Transfers patients to and from MRI scanning table and prepares patient for examination by explaining procedure and answering any questions patient may have.
  • Accountable for obtaining documentation for department records related to patient statistics, supplies, patient billing information and preservation of patient records.
    • Documents any allergic reaction, incident report regarding staff or patient situations.
    • Provides timely information for inventory of supplies.
    • Ensures all films are properly identified and numbered for each patient according to current department procedures for accurate interpretation by radiologist.
    • Assists in scheduling of examinations and documenting complete.
    • Documents confidential patient’s history to ensure appropriateness of patient for examination.
    • Documents patient charge data, modifying and initiating charges as procedure modifications are made per the radiologist.
  • Accountable for securing pertinent history from patient, patient’s chart or family member to provide the radiologist with adequate information for examination interpretation and to ensure procedural criteria is met. Thoroughly fills out, signs and dates all required forms.
    • Assists in obtaining confidential history of patient which includes allergy screening to ensure appropriateness of patient for examination as well as ensuring the administration of contrast agents during required procedures.
  • Accountable for being compliant with established Accrediting Organization and department safety standards to ensure patients and staff well being at all times.
    • Maintains magnetic and radiation safety standards.
    • Maintains fire safety standards.
    • Maintains knowledge of department Code Blue policy.
    • Maintains knowledge of departmental disaster, evacuation and quench policies.
    • Maintains and constantly implements universal and infection safety standards.
    • Maintains documentation of equipment malfunctions and monthly coil checks.
    • Attends mandatory in‑services.
    • Promotes patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
  • Accountable for keeping abreast of current magnetic resonance, and radiological skills and new developments in the field.
    • Responsible for attending in‑services and educational seminars when appropriate.
    • Responsible for instructing other technologists to certain new techniques learned, as well as working with students when required.
  • Accountable for maintaining good relations when dealing with all persons encountered in daily performance of job.
    • Relating with Internal Customers – fellow staff members, physicians.
    • Relating with External Customers – ancillary departments, inpatients/outpatients, family members.
Education / Experience Required
  • 2 years radiology or MRI program graduate
  • ARRT or ARMRIT certification
  • 1 hour annually in stroke care
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Basic knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and usual MRI procedures
  • ARRT Registry or ARMRIT
  • CPR Certification
  • MRI Certification preferred or within 12 months of hire into position for ARRT only
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to work overtime when required.
  • Ability to be flexible in starting times to meet demands (weekend rotation and flexible hours).
  • Attends additional educational and safety in‑services.
  • Ability to respond to work at short notice.
  • Exposed to radiation.
  • Ability to operate portable equipment.
  • Ability to deal with extremely ill patients.
  • Ability to communicate with patients.
  • Ability to adjust to flexible work hours.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and emergency call‑back.
  • Ability to participate on‑call program and available to meet department needs with minimal notice.
  • Ability to do light, medium or heavy lifting. Light: up to 20–50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Medium: up to 20–50 pounds occasionally and/or 10–25 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. Heavy: 50–100 pounds occasionally and/or 25–50 pounds frequently and/or 10–20 pounds constantly.
  • Ability to make independent professional decisions using good judgment skills.
  • Ability to practice high quality patient care and technical competence.
  • Ability to function with minimal assistance in performing job activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as film processing chemicals.
  • Ability to attend out‑of‑town site visits to view equipment.
  • Prerequisite: ability to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated.
  • Prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
Additional Lifting Requirements (if applicable)
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact, the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015: Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts over 35 pounds, patient handling equipment is expected to be used when available.
