Job summary

Advocate Health Care is seeking an MRI/CT technologist to position and immobilize patients, select optimum factors, and reformat data for high-quality scans.

You will perform post-processing, operate equipment, and transfer patients while ensuring safety and clear communication with radiologists and patients. Responsibilities include IV administration planning and documenting results, with ongoing training and supervision as needed.

Qualifications

  • 3 years general radiology experience.
  • ARRT RT MRI/CT Registry Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required.
  • Basic knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and usual MRI/CT procedures.
  • ARRT RT Registry.
  • IDNS License.
  • CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Position patients and select technical factors for optimal MRI/CT quality.
  • Post-process computer data to enhance images.
  • Operate MRI/CT support equipment (satellite console, disc drives, injector, formatters, laser cameras).
  • Transfer and prepare patients, explain procedures and answer questions.
  • Initiate IVs for contrast media per policy.
  • Process and copy films; network images to PACS.
  • Secure pertinent patient history for radiologist; ensure criteria met.
  • Maintain safety standards and document equipment issues.
  • Attend inservices and mentor students.

Job description

Major Responsibilities

Accountable for positioning and immobilization of patients and proper selection of technical factors along with computer reformatting of acquired data to obtain magnetic resonance scans and computer tomography procedures of optimal quality.

  • Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient and procedural basis to provide optimal quality examinations.
  • Performs post processing of computer data to enhance data and image information.
  • Operates support equipment for MRI/CT, such as satellite console, additional disc drives, pressure injector, imaging formatters, and laser cameras.
  • Transfers patients to and from MRI/CT scanning table and prepares patient for examination by explaining procedure and answering any questions patient may have.
  • Initiates IVs for administration of contrast media for MRI/CT enhancement in accordance with departmental policy and utilizing universal precautions in the process.
  • Processes and copies film.
  • Network images to PACS.
  • SAves to optical disc if necessary Accountable for securing pertinent history from patient, patient’s chart or family member to provide the radiologist with adequate information for examination interpretation and to ensure procedural criteria is met.
  • Assists in obtaining confidential history of patient, which includes allergy screening to ensure appropriateness of patient for examination as well as ensuring the administration of contrast agents during required procedures. Accountable for being compliant with established Accrediting Organization and department safety standards to ensure patients and staff well being at all times.
  • Maintains magnetic and radiation safety standards.
  • Maintains fire safety standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of department Code 10-2 policy.
  • Maintains knowledge of departmental disaster, evacuation and quench policies.
  • Maintains and constantly implements universal and infectious safety standards.
  • Maintains documentation of equipment malfunctions and monthly coil checks.
  • Attends mandatory inservices.
  • Promotes patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives. Accountable for obtaining documentation for department records related to patient statistics, supplies, patient billing information and preservation of patient records
  • Documents confidential patient’s history to ensure appropriateness of patient for examination.
  • Documents patients charge data, modifying and initiating charges as procedure modifications are made per the radiologist.
  • Documents any allergic reaction, incident report regarding staff or patient situations.
  • Provides timely information for inventory of supplies.
  • Ensures all films are properly identified and numbered for each patient according to current department procedures for accurate interpretation by radiologist.
  • Assists in scheduling of examinations and documenting complete. Accountable for keeping abreast of current magnetic resonance, computerized tomography and radiologic skills and of new developments in the field
  • Responsible for attending inservices and educational seminars when appropriate.
  • Responsible for instructing other technologists to certain new techniques learned, as well as working with students when required. Accountable for maintaining good relations when dealing with all persons encountered in daily performance of job.

  • Relating with External Customers – ancillary departments, inpatients/outpatients, and family members.
Education/Experience Required
  • 3 years general radiology experience.
  • ARRT RT MRI/CT Registry Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required.
  • Basic knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and usual MRI/CT procedures.
  • ARRT RT Registry.
  • IDNS License.
  • CPR Certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to work overtime when required.
  • Ability to be flexible in starting times to meet demands. (weekend rotation and flexible hours.)
  • Attends additional educational and safety inservices.
  • Ability to respond to work at short notice.
  • Exposed to radiation.
  • Ability to communicate with patients.
  • Ability to adjust to flexible work hours.
  • Ability to work weekends.
  • Ability to do light, medium or heavy lifting. LIGHT: Lifting up to 20-50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. MEDIUM: Lifting up to 20-50 pounds occasionally and / or up to 10 to 25 pounds frequently and / or up to 10 pounds constantly. HEAVY: Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and / or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and / or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Ability to make independent professional decisions using good judgment skills.
  • Ability to practice high quality patient care and technical competence.
  • Ability to function with minimal assistance in performing job activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as film processing chemicals.
  • Ability to attend out-of-town site visits to view equipment.
  • This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging. Prior experience with various age groups is preferred. If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
