Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking an Administrative Law Judge (Motor Vehicle Referee) to conduct hearings and render decisions on moving traffic violations, fatalities, and related offenses. The role covers Vehicle and Traffic Law, commercial operator violations, and reviews for the Appeals Board.

Preferred candidates include strong research and writing skills, sound judgment, and excellent oral communication, with additional emphasis on public service in a dynamically

Qualifications

• Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience.
• 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 2, or admission to the NYS Bar and 12 months of subsequent satisfactory legal experience in trial of issues in courts of record or in adversary proceedings.

Responsibilities

• Conduct administrative hearings and render decisions for moving traffic violations and related matters.
• Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle Appeals Board.
• Render decisions for Navigation Law by boaters and Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Laws by operators of snowmobiles.
