Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles seeks an Administrative Law Judge (Motor Vehicle Referee) to conduct hearings and render decisions on moving violations and related offenses across NYS. The role involves applying NY Vehicle and Traffic Law, preparing cases for the Appeals Board, and potentially addressing Navigation and Parks laws.

Qualifications

• Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience.
• Assistant Administrative Law Judge: 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 2, or NYS Bar admission with 12 months trial experience.
• Preferred: at least three years’ experience as a NYS Attorney with strong research and writing skills.
• Excellent oral communication and sound judgment are highly valued.

Responsibilities

• Conduct administrative hearings and render decisions for moving traffic violations and related offenses.
• Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle Appeals Board.
• Apply NY Vehicle and Traffic Laws and related regulations; consider other statutes as needed.
