Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking an Administrative Law Judge (Motor Vehicle Referee) to conduct hearings and issue decisions on moving traffic violations, fatal incidents, and related offenses. You will evaluate cases under the Vehicle and Traffic Law, Navigational and Parks laws, and EMS rules, contributing to a fair results process.

Preferred candidates will have multiple years of legal practice, strong research and writing skills, and a commitment to public service,

Qualifications

• Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience.
• 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 2, or admission to NYS Bar and 12 months of subsequent satisfactory legal experience in the trial of issues before a governmental department or agency.

Responsibilities

• Conduct administrative hearings and render decisions for adjudication of moving traffic violations and related offenses.
• Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle Appeals Board.
• Apply NY Vehicle and Traffic Laws, Commissioner’s Rules and Regulations, and related laws to issues including Navigation and Parks laws.
