Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine seeks a Motor Vehicle Operator to drive a range of vehicles, including ambulances, to transport people and goods on campus. You will map routes, load cargo, and document transportation records while performing basic vehicle maintenance as needed.

The role requires a NYS driver license and compliance with safety standards. This full-time position supports the Receiving & Courier Services department at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Qualifications

  • New York State driver license appropriate for the vehicle type.
  • Possession of CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D may be required.
  • Ability to lift and carry crates and cargo onto/off transport vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to safe operation.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a variety of motor vehicles on and off state property to transport people, material, and equipment.
  • Map routes, verify manifests and records of goods transported.
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance such as oil, tires, and lights as needed.
  • Operate and maintain motorized equipment to support maintenance or grounds teams.

Job description

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a Motor Vehicle Operators regularly drive any of a variety of motor vehicles including automobiles, buses, trucks, and ambulances in order to transport people, material, and equipment as required.


Duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator may include the following but are not limited to

Drives a variety of motor vehicles both on and off State property in order to transport people, material, and equipment as required and plow snow from roadways and parking lots.



  • May map routes, itineraries and points of call.

  • Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.

  • Moves or caries cargo from the vehicle to the delivery or storage point.

  • Posts manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and people transported.

  • Starts, stops, steers and controls vehicles both on the grounds of State institutions and facilities and over-the-road.

  • Monitors gauges and checks fluid levels and tire pressures.


Tends to the routine maintenance of vehicles operated in order to insure that cargo is moved as required.



  • Changes oil and spark plugs.

  • Changes tires and washes vehicles.

  • Pumps gas and adds water to radiator, oil to crankcase and air to the tires.

  • Replaces lamp bulbs.

  • Performs same tasks as mentioned above.


May operate and maintain motorized equipment in support of maintenance, grounds or building trades crews.



  • Performs same tasks as mentioned above.


Posts manifests and other records of goods and people transported in order to document their safe delivery.


Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess a New York State driver license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license.



  • Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question.

  • Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling required.

  • Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.

  • Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required.

  • Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.


Preferred Qualifications

Driver must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Preferred for applicant to have taken defensive driving class. Must have a clean license to apply for position.


Posting Overview

This position will remain posted until filled or for a maximum of 90 days. An initial review of all applicants will occur two weeks from the posting date. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:


  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*

  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.

  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*

  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.

  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).


Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer


  • The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $38,235 / year. The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.


Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as


  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)
