Job description

As a Motor Equipment Operator II, you will be physically active throughout the day with a variety of duties! This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and adjoining vegetation. Duties include:

  1. Patching asphalt roads
  2. Sealing cracks
  3. Repairing curbs
  4. Maintaining and repairing sidewalks (which involves cement and asphalt work)
  5. Sweeping streets
  6. Plowing and removing snow on streets and sidewalks
  7. Sanding and salting roads
  8. Repairing damage caused by snowplows
  9. Operating moderate to heavy motor equipment
  10. Making minor repairs to equipment
  11. Performing unskilled or semi-skilled laboring tasks
  12. Supervising highway work crews when the Highway Foreman is absent

Note: This position is subject to recall and stand-by duty during non-regular working hours, weekends, and holidays. You should be able to respond within 60 minutes depending on weather conditions to staff the work site. There is a considerable amount of overtime during winter months. This position is also subject to federal commercial driver's license (CDL) drug and alcohol requirements.

Minimum qualifications:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education/experience. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with tank endorsement is required; Level II Roads Scholar Certificate desired.

Pay and Benefits:

During the 6-month probationary period, the pay rate for this position is $22.89 per hour. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, this position will move to the regular pay schedule which consists of pay steps and hourly rates ranging from $23.75 to $28.32 per hour depending on experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with maintenance and repair of water and sewer mains, involving locating and diagnosing sewer stoppages, water main leaks, and service breaks.
  2. Maintain fire hydrants.
  3. Plow and remove snow.
  4. Assist with laying out water and sewer lines.
  5. Maintain truck inspection check sheet.
  6. Mow and maintain lawns and prune vegetation.
  7. Assist with paving roads.
  8. Read blueprints.
  9. Be on-call and available for water and/or sewer work as scheduled.
  10. Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs of tools and equipment.
  11. Work with power tools and operate heavy equipment.
  12. Sweep streets and sidewalks.
  13. Sand and salt roads.
  14. Perform clean-up after storms to remove trees and downed vegetation from the City streets.
  15. Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of drainage systems.
  16. Prune trees and vegetation.
  17. Perform landscaping duties including raking leaves.
  18. Repair damage caused by snow plows.
  19. Assist with traffic control.

Note: This position is subject to stand-by duty and callback during non-regular working hours, weekends, and holidays. It is also subject to federally mandated random drug testing. You should be able to respond within 30 minutes (depending on weather conditions) to the work site.

Customers: City employees, entire City facilities, contractors, local businesses, and the public.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Computer Skills: Basic familiarity.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid NH commercial driver's license (CDL) with tank endorsement and air brakes required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The position involves light to heavy physical labor. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and smell. The employee will frequently move and/or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level is loud to very loud. This position primarily involves work in outdoor weather conditions. There is frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, caustic chemicals, vibration, and moving mechanical parts. Outdoor weather conditions vary depending on the season.
