As a member of this team, your primary responsibility is to serve and satisfy the credit union members. This includes whether your job involves dealing with members directly or providing service to someone who does.

The Mortgage Manager serves as the anchor of PFCU’s mortgage lending program, with full responsibility for the administration, management, and performance of mortgage production, underwriting, processing, funding, secondary marketing, and post-close quality control. This role oversees all employees within the Mortgage Department and ensures consistent, accurate, efficient, and courteous service to members.

As the accountable leader for portfolio performance, this role monitors trends in underwriting, valuation, collateral condition, and exceptions, proactively identifying and correcting drift before issues escalate. The Mortgage Manager ensures clarity replaces guesswork for both staff and members, fostering a culture where decisions are well documented, defensible, and delivered with professionalism and respect.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Establishes and protects the lending philosophy, including judgment framework, risk posture, fairness expectations, and communication standards.
  • Motivate the mortgage staff, provide support, input, feedback, and guidance concerning daily operations; assist in resolving problems, member issues, execute and interpret policy and procedures.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and development for mortgage staff; perform all necessary management functions including, but not limited to, hiring, training, performance evaluations, goal setting/review, disciplinary action, operations and backup support to assistant managers.
  • Oversees the full lending operation from intake through post-closing, ensuring workflow discipline across all roles.
  • Manages underwriting posture, exception governance, valuation/condition oversight, and documentation standards.
  • Partners with the System Administrator to embed workflow and policy into LOS structure and associated mortgage systems. Initiate system updates and troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
  • Monitors portfolio performance and identifies emerging patterns in risk, fairness, exceptions, and documentation.
  • Ensures that staff follow consistent procedures to protect fairness in decisioning, documentation, and communication.
  • Works with leadership to set production strategy, staffing expectations, performance standards, and quality benchmarks.
  • Represents the lending program with executive leadership, auditors, regulators, and the Board.
  • Understand and follow PFCU policies and procedures complying with mortgage department, federal regulations, including, but not limited to: Bank Secrecy Act; RESPA, TILA, Fair Lending, etc.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships cross departmentally.
  • Enhance job performance by applying up-to-date professional and technical knowledge gained by attending training sessions, reviewing professional publications and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Ensure that VP of Lending is kept fully informed on the conditions and operations of the mortgage department.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mortgage underwriting, processing, or lending operations preferred.
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for NMLS Registry.
  • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills – speaking, writing, listening, comprehending, prioritizing and initiative preferred.
  • Experience with aging housing stock, limited-equity borrowers, or underserved markets is a plus.
  • Familiarity with LOS administration or workflow design preferred.
  • PC proficiency and working knowledge in the Microsoft Windows environment and mortgage based applications required.
  • Strong understanding of income analysis, collateral risk, and sustainable underwriting preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policy consistently.
  • Ability to partner with System Administrator to embed structure in LOS.
  • Ability to receive and maintain confidential information.
  • Expert level organizational skills including attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and multitasking skills.
