Job summary

LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans is recruiting Morgue Technicians to manage donated cadaveric remains. The role involves receiving, cataloging, testing blood, embalming, cremation, and preparing donors for teaching purposes.

You will maintain morgue and lab conditions, handle hazardous chemicals, and transport donors between facilities while upholding dignity and respect for donors and families.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in anatomy, biology, or another health-related field.
• MT1 requires 0–2 years; MT2 requires 2–4 years of related experience.
• Substitution: 4 additional years of cadaver experience can substitute for the bachelor’s degree.

Responsibilities

• Receive and catalog human remains from the willed body program.
• Evaluate, blood test, and embalm donors as required.
• Cremate donors and prepare them for graduate or postgraduate courses.
• Oversee donors in courses and ensure respectful handling and privacy.
• Manage and dispose of hazardous chemicals; maintain crematory, labs and morgue facilities.
• Transport donors to LSUHSC and affiliated institutions as needed.
• Promote a culture of respect and advocacy for donors and their families.

Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Morgue Technician will be responsible for the cadaveric remains of donors to the willed body program at LSUHSC-New Orleans. The incumbent will receive and catalog human remains; evaluate, blood test and embalm donors; cremate donors; prepare donors for use in graduate and post-graduate courses and oversee donors in courses; manage and dispose of hazardous chemicals; clean and maintain crematory, labs and the morgue, including freezers and cold boxes; transport donors to LSUHSC and affiliated institutions; and maintain a culture of respect and advocacy for donors and their families while acting as an ambassador the LSUHSC willed body program.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's

Required Field of Study: Anatomy, biology, or another health-related field

Number of years required to perform the job:MT1: 0-2 years; MT2: 2-4 years

Type of experience required to perform the job:Mortuary, dissection or other related experience

Substitution:An additional four years of experience working with cadavers can substitute for the bachelor's degree.
