Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform specimen testing and analysis to aid clinical diagnosis and treatment. The role emphasizes QC/QA documentation, equipment maintenance, and serving as a technical consultant within the Molecular Biology department.

The candidate will evaluate specimens, perform routine and specialized tests, verify results, and ensure timely reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or a related field is required.
• Less than one year of clinical laboratory training and/or experience is required.
• Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or an equivalent certification is required or waivers apply for advanced degrees or substantial experience.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates specimen adequacy for test performance and obtains specimens for analysis.
• Performs routine and specialized testing in the assigned area and correlates findings with disease stage.
• Reviews and verifies test results, communicates abnormal findings, and completes required documentation.
• Performs daily quality control and quality assurance measures and monitors proficiency testing as required.
• Maintains cleanliness and Lean standards in the work area and ensures turnaround-time standards are met.
• Assists with education and training of students and new employees and provides technical advisory support.
