Job description

Overview

Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Molecular Biology Lead Technician to perform research and/or development in collaboration with scientific and technical staff. The Contractor will provide laboratory support within the Center for Genome Sciences in the Molecular Biology Division, conducting research on threats related to biodefense and infectious diseases. Responsibilities include nucleic acid extraction, PCR, sequencing, data analysis, and lab maintenance. The position supports USAMRIID at Fort Detrick, MD, working to protect the Warfighter from biological threats and support disease outbreak investigations.

Responsibilities
  1. Operate automation equipment such as Hamilton STAR and King Fisher for high-throughput sample processing.
  2. Perform next-generation sequencing (NGS) including Illumina and Oxford Nanopore platforms, and conduct molecular biology techniques like cloning and mutagenesis.
  3. Manage equipment like Western Blot systems, Covaris, and real-time PCR, and maintain cell cultures in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 labs.
  4. Analyze pathogen effects on hosts using RNAseq and genomics techniques.
  5. Support animal studies, including sample collection and processing, and conduct immunological assays.
  6. Train new staff, ensure SOP compliance, and assist in report and manuscript preparation.
  7. Maintain laboratory supplies, equipment, and records, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  8. Communicate work progress and issues to PI or TPOC, and coordinate with maintenance vendors.
  9. Participate in lab decontamination, waste disposal, and safety procedures.
  10. Serve as lab manager for maintenance and safety checks.
  11. Assist with cross-training and support biosurveillance and training missions, possibly involving travel.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master of Science or at least 6 years of genomics experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of complex lab procedures, ability to meet project deadlines, and good communication skills.
  • US Citizenship, ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance, and BRPR, CPRP, or CSPRP certification.

Physical Capabilities

  • Maintain health to meet BPRP, CPRP, and CSPRP requirements.
  • Up-to-date immunizations, negative TB test if applicable, and ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing at a computer.
Work Environment

Primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual salary ranges from $57,650 to $93,100, with comprehensive benefits including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
