Role Description

The Modernization Superintendent is a full-time, on-site role based in the Washington DC-Baltimore Area. This position oversees modernization projects for elevators and escalators, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating field activities to ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget. The role manages installation crews, conducts site inspections, and verifies that work meets Schindler's quality standards and complies with local codes and safety regulations. The Modernization Superintendent collaborates with project managers, customers, and suppliers to resolve technical issues, manage materials and equipment, and provide clear updates on project status. Daily responsibilities also include maintaining documentation, monitoring costs, supporting commissioning activities, and driving continuous improvement in field operations.

Qualifications
  • Experience overseeing construction, mechanical, or electrical modernization projects, preferably in the elevator or vertical transportation industry.
  • Strong skills in project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and coordination of field teams.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, building codes, and best practices for on-site work in commercial or residential environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and installation manuals.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with technicians, customers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Competence with basic digital tools (e.g., project management software, spreadsheets, and reporting systems) to track progress and budgets.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical trade schooling or an associate degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience in field operations or construction is highly beneficial.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the Washington DC-Baltimore Area to multiple job sites.
