Mobile Phlebotomist / Specialty Sample Collector
Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) / Regional Field Operations
Job type PRN / 1099 Contractor
Hours 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Flexible / On-Call windows may apply)
Language English (Required); Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) is a strong plus but optional
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, independent, and professional Mobile Phlebotomist or Clinical Medical Assistant to join our field operations team. The ideal candidate will travel directly to various offsite locations—including patient residences, corporate offices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and specialized collection sites—to procure high-quality biological specimens. Because mobile collectors work independently on the road, this role requires exceptional time management, flawless adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), meticulous administrative documentation, and an empathetic bedside manner to ensure patient comfort and safety.
In addition to routine clinical venipuncture, this specialized position encompasses legal and immigration DNA relationship sample collections, DOT and Non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings, and corporate wellness testing events. Bilingual capability is highly advantageous for communicating with our diverse client base, though it is not a mandatory requirement.
Key Responsibilities
Mobile Field Logistics & Patient Care
- Travel independently to assigned residential, corporate, or institutional locations throughout the regional service area.
- Maintain a flexible daily schedule, manage routes efficiently, and ensure strict punctuality for all scheduled appointments.
- Provide exceptional customer service and patient care, effectively calming anxious patients and explaining collection procedures clearly.
- Confirm patient identities strictly according to established regulatory guidelines and SOPs before initiating any collection.
- Provide bilingual assistance and clear translation for Spanish-speaking patients throughout the testing and documentation process, if applicable.
Clinical Specimen Collection & Processing
- Perform high-quality blood collections using venipuncture and capillary techniques on patients of diverse demographics.
- Conduct specialized, chain-of-custody collections including legal/immigration DNA relationship testing and DOT/Non-DOT drug screening.
- Centrifuge, split, aliquot, and process blood and other biological fluid specimens in the field or at a designated home base as required by specific test orders.
- Maintain comprehensive, meticulous specimen logs to ensure full traceability of all collected samples.
Labeling, Packaging, and Transport
- Label all specimen containers precisely at the side of the patient immediately following collection, verifying matching identifiers on paperwork or electronic requisitions.
- Package, preserve, and store biological samples safely in accordance with laboratory directories of services, maintaining strict temperature controls (iced, ambient, or refrigerated) during transit.
- Deliver or ship prepared specimens to designated reference laboratories or regional drop-off points within mandated timeframes.
- Adhere strictly to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and hazardous materials packaging and shipping regulations.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Graduation from an accredited postsecondary phlebotomy training program OR an accredited Medical Assistant (MA) program.
- Current national certification from an approved agency: Phlebotomy credentials (such as AMT, ASCP, or NHA) OR Medical Assistant credentials (such as CMA, RMA, or CCMA) with demonstrated phlebotomy proficiency.
- Active, valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record and reliable personal transportation.
Experience & Specialized Knowledge
- Minimum of 2 to 3 years of proven hands-on phlebotomy or clinical medical assisting experience (highly preferred).
- Demonstrated experience with chain-of-custody processing; certification or prior training in DOT drug screen collections and DNA sample collection is considered a major asset (employer-funded training may be available for qualified candidates).
- Strong geographic knowledge of the CSRA for driving, route planning, and navigation across regional territories to ensure timely appointments.
- Exceptional administrative clarity, strong attention to clerical details, and experience utilizing mobile apps or digital portals for document submittal.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision while maintaining clear communication with supervisors and dispatch coordinators.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry mobile equipment or supply coolers weighing up to 25–50 pounds occasionally.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and kneeling to accommodate different patient settings and environments.
