Job summary

Responsibilities

Job description

Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI) drives dramatic improvements in the health of New Yorkers by feeding people who are hungry, healing families broken apart by violence, and bridging the gaps between people and the compassionate health care they deserve. CHASI provides outreach, education, prevention, and direct support services for populations most affected by health disparities - people with low or no income, low-income people with chronic illnesses, people with criminal justice involvement, people who use drugs, domestic violence survivors, people of color, and the LGBTQ community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mobile Health Unit (MHU) Driver plays a critical role in advancing CHASI's mission by delivering essential services directly to communities across Staten Island. This position is responsible for the safe transportation, setup, and operation of the Mobile Health Unit at scheduled community locations. The MHU Driver ensures the unit is fully functional, secure, and maintained in optimal condition at all times.

The role includes routine inspections, maintenance coordination, and onsite support to ensure a safe, efficient environment. The MHU Driver also welcomes guests, provides basic triage, and connects them to the appropriate CHASI service on site.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Transportation & Operations
  • Safely operate and transport the Mobile Health Unit to designated sites in compliance with all NYS and DOT regulations.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and maintain accurate vehicle logs.
  • Ensure timely arrival, proper setup, and breakdown of the unit at each location. Including all cabinets and doors are secured.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment by monitoring risks, hazards, and suspicious activity.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies in accordance with CHASI protocols and Complete incident reports and ensure compliance with all policies and regulations
  • Inspect the mobile unit and maintain orderly and safe condition - including wheelchair lift.
  • Assist with fueling fleet as needed, including diesel. Cost covered by company.
  • Maintain a clean driving record, CDL certification, and annual commercial driver medical certification.
Maintenance & Janitorial
  • Inspect, maintain, and ensure operational readiness of the mobile unit.
  • Report mechanical or equipment issues.
  • Coordinate repairs, inspections, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Ensure required vehicle inspections, registrations, permits, and compliance-related items remain current.
  • Ensure the interior of the Mobile Health Unit is clean, organized, and ready for staff and client use before each scheduled activity.
  • Wipe down high-touch surfaces daily, including countertops, door handles, cabinet handles, seating areas, light switches, and workstations.
  • Empty trash and replace liners as needed
  • Ensure restrooms or handwashing areas, if applicable, are clean, stocked, and functioning properly.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the floors by sweep and mopping
  • Clean the exterior of the unit as needed and work with operations on scheduling exterior wash.
Administrative
  • Maintain required documentation, such as mileage logs, vehicle checklist, vehicle repair and gas receipts.
  • On a monthly basis upload all documents to finance central and/or any driver needed.
  • Assist with training of new or part-time drivers as needed.
  • Perform additional duties assigned to support operations.
  • Manage inventory and ensure adequate supplies are stocked including restocking cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, paper products, gloves, and other hygiene-related materials as needed
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record (driver's license background check required)
  • Experience as a driver of oversized vehicles/buses
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operations for large diesel vehicles
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs regularly
  • Customer service experience preferred; drive must be able to interact with diverse groups of colleagues and clients in a positive and cooperative manner at all times
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record (driver's license background check required)
  • Must have flexible schedule and be able to work weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reports To: Vice President, Operations

Position Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Rate: $17.78-$20.67 per hour
