Job summary

Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. is seeking a Mobile Equipment Operator for scrap operations. You will operate heavy mobile equipment, including hydraulic grapple crane, magnet crane, and front endloader, to process, handle, and weigh scrap material and unload from in-coming sources.

You will inspect materials, sort scrap by grade, monitor conveyors, record weights, and perform routine equipment care. The role requires safety focus, ability to work rotating shifts, and 1–3 years of mobile equipment

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 1–3 years of mobile equipment experience preferred.
• Basic computer and math skills.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy mobile equipment to safely move and weigh scrap material.
• Inspect scrap for quality, grade and safety.

Job Summary:

Operates heavymobile equipment specific to scrap operationsarea to includea mobile crane with a hydraulic grappleorfront endloader toprocess,handle, and weighscrap material.Unloadscrapmaterial from incomingsourcesandloadscrapfrom existingpiles ontotransport or non-ferrous processingequipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for safelyoperatingmobile equipmentto includehydraulic grapple crane,magnet crane,front endloaderand other mobile equipmentin scrap operations.
2. Exercises extreme care in picking up and transporting loads, clearingobstaclesand properly positioning lifts to prevent production delays, damageto equipment or property and/or injury toothers.Maintains heightened awareness of surroundings at all times to include pedestrians, mobile equipment, rail traffic, etc.
3. Inspect scrap for any non-conforming material for quality, grade, and safety purposes.This inspection process is critical to the operation and requirescontinuousattentionin order toavoiderrorsand equipment damage.
4. Sort and separate scrap according to gradein order toproperlymaintainscrap piles for inventory control.
5. Watch operation of surrounding conveyors andequipment, andcommunicate any problems to responsible personnel.
6. Move and weigh material, accurately recording weight, product, and location.
7. Functions as relief for the Mobile Equipment Operator positions requiring versatility to adequately carry out the normal operator duties during the substitution period.
8. Perform routine equipment care such as lubrication, greasing,fuelingand cleaning of mobile equipment.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Monitor all loads and material for potential fire hazards.
2. Followsall PPE requirements and safety rules/guidelines for all tasks being performed.
3. Maintains communication with coworkers through two-way radio and hand signals.
4. Work independently and as part of a self-directed team with limited supervision.
5. Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
6. Engagement in GBS tools andmethodology.
7. Complete training requirements to step up to the next job grade.
8. Assistsmaintenance and operations personnel as needed.
9. All other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Basic computer and math skills.

1-3years of mobile equipment experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend,operatemobile equipment, crawl, kneel, and push and pull objects.
• Ability to reach, squat, and tolerate prolonged sitting.
• Ability tolift upto 70 lbs.
• Ability tooperatehand controls with both hands and foot pedals with both feet.
• Ability to perform sustained overhead reaching.
• Ability to workinextreme ambient temperatures up to 160°F.
• Ability to work in cramped quarters and at heights.
• Ability toworka rotating shift schedule including days,nightsand weekends.
• Ability to tolerate working in areas where noise levels can reach 120decibels.
