Job summary

CSPNJ in New Jersey is hiring a Peer Support Specialist to join mobile crisis outreach teams serving Middlesex and Union counties. You will respond to 988-dispatched calls, provide crisis care through a peer lens, and promote recovery with empathy and trauma-informed practice.

Qualifications

• Must have lived experience and at least 2+ years of continuous recovery from SMI or SUD.
• High School Diploma or equivalent with 2+ years of work experience in mental health.
• Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to foster meaningful, respectful connections.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure in challenging situations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication in crisis engagement.
• Willingness to disclose use of mental health services and speak openly about recovery.

Responsibilities

• Respond to calls dispatched through the 988 crisis center.
• Provide immediate support and crisis intervention for individuals in crisis.
• Link to ongoing community mental health services and initiate follow-up contacts.
• Collaborate with referral sources and stabilization networks for case management.
• Identify strengths and goals with individuals and support skill-building.
• Utilize trauma-informed practices to de-escalate and support recovery.
• Engage and support individuals with empathy and professionalism.
