MNSRP FIELD BIOLOGY ASSOCIATE – ID# 226522

CLOSING DATE:

Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed two (2) years in duration from date of hire), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP), located on Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,220/Mon.

DUTIES:

• Works as part of the operations team conducting field work – including seabird population survey and monitoring, habitat restoration work for native and endangered species, and invasive predator monitoring and control.
• Field work requires the ability to drive project vehicles on and off road, and within the scope of training, handles pesticides, uses air guns and other approved predator control methods.
• Project support duties include data entry and summary analysis for multiple target species in support of field operations. The ability to keep detailed notes and quality check data entry is required.
• Participates in planning and implementation of ground and aerial field operations to survey and monitor seabird species and their habitats.
• Works with other project staff to design and present public outreach and education activities.
• Assists MNSRP Biology Technician and MNSRP Project Coordinator with field and project operations, and coordinating and training staff and volunteers.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.

EXPERIENCE

• At least one (1) year of experience in a natural resource related field.

KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of Hawaiian seabird ecology, biota and threats from alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.
• Knowledge of basic biological principles and ecosystem dynamics.
• Knowledge of field techniques used to locate and monitor and protect seabird species.
• Data entry and word processing experience.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

• Ability to read maps and aerial photographs.
• Ability to accurately collect and store data for target species survey and control activities.
• Demonstrated ability to navigate in remote areas with and without a GPS unit.
• Attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
• Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to work outdoors on extremely rough terrain and under adverse weather conditions. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days. Able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds. Position involves sitting for long periods of time.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Good computer skills.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite and tablet based Global Positioning System (GPS) systems.
