HCSU QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ANALYST (POPULATION MONITORING) – ID# 226505.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Hawai`i Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo (UHH) in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (USGS PIERC). Work location is in the USGS PIERC office in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,667 - $5,917/Mon.

DUTIES

Responsible for entering, checking, scanning, processing, compiling, and analyzing data collected from studies of native and exotic plants and animals, their habitats, and their ecologies. Applies procedures for managing datasets and ensures that datasets are organized, proofed, controlled for quality, and properly documented. Informs Project Leader in methods of data and database management, assists in quantitative analysis techniques, and helps prepare deliverables summarizing methods and results. With guidance from PIERC Project Leader, utilizes appropriate quantitative techniques to analyze and interpret the resulting data from existing large datasets as well as other available data. Conducts quantitative analysis to meet specific project goals and deliverables, utilizing appropriate statistical and quantitative techniques to analyze data and interpret results. Documents analysis and performs data management and database archiving. Communicates processes, results, and interpretations to Project Leader and other project researchers. Assists with preparing research products for the USGS policy and quality reviews, such as FSP. Produces written and graphic summaries for internal and peer reviewed reports and presentations at scientific meetings and workshops. Attends meetings with collaborators and discusses progress, analyses, and future steps for projects. Works with the Project Leaders on developing reports for technical or journal publications. Collects biological, climatic, environmental, and hydrological samples in the field, standardizes and maintains research and monitoring data, and ensures proper data collection protocols are followed in the field. Drives to various field work sites as necessary.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION

Master`s Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Biometry, Statistics, Quantitative Ecology, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in applied statistics. Experience must include data management, analyzing data and reporting results, and gathering and recording field data for research.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of principles and ability in techniques of database management, applied statistics and other aspects of quantitative analysis including density and abundance estimation, and trend assessment. Familiarity with the operation of personal computers, Microsoft Office, Windows operating system, R computing language, spreadsheet, database, and graphics programs. Knowledge of general methods involving gathering and recording field data for research projects including the collection of samples and software to manage data. Working knowledge of Hawai‘i`s diverse ecosystems and geography, conservation challenges, native and non-native flora and fauna, principles of Hawai‘i`s terrestrial ecology and conservation biology, and social landscapes.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must possess strong data management and quantitative analytical skills. Ability to work independently to manage large datasets as part of the design, organization, quality control, and documentation of databases. Ability to comprehend complex analytical problems and interpret results of field studies with scientific rigor. Ability to prepare technical reports as well as scientific manuscripts with good grammar and proficiency for peer-review and eventual publication. Ability to effectively communicate orally, and to assemble and disseminate research results through presentations with stakeholders and at scientific meetings. High degree of attention to detail, and high level of organization and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to safely operate, maintain, and service biological recording and measurement instruments, and work with high attention to detail for completion and verification of data collection procedures to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Ability to record and navigate to field sites using a map, compass, and handheld GPS unit. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Applicants selected must be a U.S. citizen, and must be able to meet security requirements for working in a Federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a Federal background check performed within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from the date of hire and re-certify annually. Must be able to complete the USGS-PIERC vehicle safety training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within 30 days from date of hire, and re-certify annually. Must be able to complete the Workplace Violence Prevention training within 30 days from date of hire, and re-certify annually.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to work at remote field sites where exposure to hot and cold temperatures, heavy rainfall, mosquitoes, and difficult terrain is common. Must be able to bend, walk, and hike over rough and uneven terrain for fieldwork. Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to camp in remote areas for up to five (5) consecutive days.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with field data collection in the Pacific conducting population monitoring or using distance sampling methods. Familiarity with additional statistical and geospatial packages (S+, SAS, MiniTab, ArcGIS, qGIS or similar). Ability to research and evaluate methods to improve the sampling design, and analytical and modeling techniques to estimate population size and trend in abundance. Additional years of experience in ecological research in Hawai‘i. Additional years of experience analyzing datasets collected in Hawai‘i.
