Qualifications

MAUI NR/ER FIELD ASSOCIATE – ID# 226469.

3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), National Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Section, located in Kahului, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $3,927/Mon.

DUTIES:

Conducts a broad spectrum of native ecosystem protection and management activities on the Island of Maui. Tasks include, but are not limited to control of non-native plants and animals; vegetation monitoring; seed collection; and outplanting native plants throughout the Maui Natural Area Reserves System (NARS), as well as other managed lands. Drives to access field sites. Oversees field assistants, volunteers, and interns on work assignments in the absence of the Field Crew Leader. Maintains field equipment, tracks supply inventories, and assists with public relations activities. Assists with projects related to infrastructure development (e.g., fences, land zones, trails and baseyards), outreach and education (e.g., signage) and other critical items related to Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) mission.

Data collection and reporting requiring the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), ArcGIS, field notes, photographs, aerial surveys, and Microsoft Office.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • EDUCATION Associate`s Degree from an accredited community college or university. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and two (2) years of experience in workrelated to natural resource management may substitute for an Associate`s Degree.).
  • EXPERIENCE One to three (1-3) years of experience in work relatedto natural resource management.
  • KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and threats from alien species. Knowledge of weed control techniques and tools, including familiarity with pesticides. Knowledge of wildlife control techniques.
  • ABILITIES & SKILLS Must be willing and able to work with and around pesticides. Ability to use smart phone, compass, map, and GPS hand-held units and personal computer (PC). Ability to input field data into a computer using database and spreadsheet programs. Ability to communicate wellorally and in writing. Must be able to operate hand and power tools. Must possess a valid driver's license(and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Mustbe able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Mustbe able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within three (3) months from date of hire. Mustbe able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. Ability to hike up to ten (10) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Must be able to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation under difficult conditions (e.g., heat,rain, cold temperatures, and poor footing).

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT:

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor`s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resource Management or closely related field. Experience working in direct natural resource management. Experience working with native ecosystems in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with NEPM or NARS. Previous field work experience on Maui.
