Job summary

United Food Bank in Mesa, AZ is seeking a results-oriented Controller to lead general ledger, cash flows, and financial reporting for the organization and its subsidiary Waste Not. You will strengthen internal controls, manage month-end close, ensure grant accounting compliance, and work with the CFO to support budgeting and audits.

The ideal candidate has a BS/BA in accounting and at least 5 years of nonprofit accounting, with proven leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

• BS/BA degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5+ years of non-profit accounting experience, including restricted funds and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
• Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
• Excellent leadership skills, including managing conflict, coaching/counseling, mentoring, etc.
• Advanced experience with Microsoft Office and integrated warehouse, inventory, and accounting software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all daily accounting operations.
• Ensure an accurate and timely month-end close.
• Prepare monthly financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, and management reports.
• Oversee posting of monthly journal entries, reconciliations of cash and investment accounts, and supporting schedules.
• Maintain subsidiary schedules of balance sheet accounts (fixed assets, prepaid expenses, etc.).
• Ensure compliance with IRS, Feeding America, and government contracting agencies; develop internal controls.
• Support CFO on budgeting, grants management, and audit preparation.
