Placements24 is seeking a Mine Ventilation Engineer for a major mining operator in Queenstown, Eastern Cape. You will design, implement and manage underground ventilation systems to maintain air quality, temperature and energy efficiency.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Mining Engineering with a ventilation specialization and at least 5 years of underground experience, plus proficiency with Ventsim or Whittle. You will work on-site with cross-functional teams to optimize operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and optimize mine ventilation networks, including fan selection, ducting, and auxiliary ventilation systems.
• Conduct air quality monitoring and ensure compliance with regulatory standards for dust, gases, and temperature.
• Perform heat and mass transfer calculations for underground environments.
• Develop and implement ventilation surveys and risk assessments.
• Manage ventilation infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.
• Collaborate with mine planning, production, and safety departments to integrate ventilation strategies.
• Utilize specialized ventilation modeling software to simulate airflow and predict conditions.
• Investigate ventilation-related incidents and implement corrective measures.
• Ensure the efficient operation of ventilation systems to minimize energy consumption.
• Prepare technical reports and recommendations for management regarding ventilation systems and improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering with a specialization in Ventilation, or a related Engineering discipline.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in mine ventilation engineering, specifically within underground mining operations.
• Proficiency in mine ventilation modeling software (e.g., Ventsim, Whittle).
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and air quality management principles.
• Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation pertaining to mine ventilation.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with diverse teams.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.
• Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition for ventilation monitoring is an asset.
• Must be willing to work on-site in Queenstown, Eastern Cape .
