The Opportunity
When you join Smurfit Westrock Roanoke Rapids Mill, you will be part of a team that creates sustainable paper and packaging solutions that help move the world forward. In this role, you will lead the day-to-day activities of the Project Engineering Department at Smurfit Westrock's Roanoke Rapids Mill, where safe performance and environmental excellence are essential. As Shipping Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing daily activities for shipping finished rolls to customers; managing all aspects of shipping, roll finishing, warehousing, and providing direction and leadership to shipping personnel.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Manage finishing, warehousing and shipping activities including safety, maintenance personnel and budget.
- Directly manages a team of 28-31 hourly employees assigned to 12-hour shifts in a continuous 24/7 operation.
- Directly manages hourly shift employees responsible for preparing and loading kraft and linerboard paper-roll shipments for safe, accurate, and damage-free transportation by rail and over-the-road (OTR) truck.
- Responsible for loading plans and methods to ensure safe, damage free delivery.
- Ensure all departmental training needs are documented and current.
- Works with railroad and corporate supply chain on rail related items.
- Boxcar quality and supply
- Rail complaints
- Track issues
- Works with trucking, railroad and corporate transportation on developing new loading plans or loading trials as needed.
- Helps coordinate machine scheduling with paper mill and production planning to ensure machines are trimmed in efficient manner and meets customer needs.
- Manage third party spotting service for the mill.
- Work with corporate transportation team on truck, rail & intermodal needs.
- Leads and coordinate mill, logistics or other supply chain projects as needed.
- Work with corporate supply chain and Logistics on inventory reduction projects.
What You Need to Succeed
Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; Supply Chain, Logistics or related field preferred.
- Minimum five years’ experience in supply chain, logistics, warehousing or related field.
- Evidence of technical knowledge and management of Warehouse Management Systems, and shipping/pick and pack systems.
- Must have demonstrated Freight knowledge and negotiations.
- Must have demonstrated success managing and leading a progressive Shipping, Inventory, and Receiving operations in a fast paced, ever changing environment.
- Experience in establishing and maintaining production metrics and performance standards.
- Must have demonstrated experience in workforce selection, supervision and development.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Good problem solving skills, including use of quality tools.
- Ability to effectively plan and organize work, people, time and maintain discipline to the plan and to meet current and future demand.
- Math and measurement skills to analyze and report on metrics.
- Must have the ability to collaborate with leadership in a multi-functional environment.
- Knowledge of or be able to learn safety rules and procedures, operating, maintenance, and technical policies and procedures.
- Must have demonstrated ability to lead change.
- Must be able to relate effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
