Job summary

International Minerals Carlsbad LLC is seeking a Mill Safety Specialist to support occupational health and safety programs at its Carlsbad operation. This role works with employees, contractors, supervisors, and leaders to identify hazards, manage risk, and promote safe work practices.

The ideal candidate has mining safety experience and knowledge of regulations, with the ability to coach and influence safe behavior across the site.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with at least three years of related experience as a safety professional in an industrial or mining environment.
• Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety or an equivalent field.
• Working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
• Certified Safety Professional or Certified Mine Safety Professional designation is a plus.
• Candidates must establish an approved plan to obtain the designation within two years if not already held.
• Ability to work safely in active mining and industrial environments.
• Ability to apply regulatory and company requirements to site operations.
• Ability to coach and influence employees without direct supervisory authority.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a visible field presence and engage employees on active work, hazards, and safe practices.
• Perform inspections, observations, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate safety concerns.
• Serve as safety resource for regulatory requirements and company safety rules.
• Address unsafe acts/conditions promptly and develop action plans with supervisors.
• Support incident investigations and maintain related documentation.
• Coordinate and facilitate safety investigations after required training.
• Monitor and ensure completion of corrective actions.
• Participate in Management of Change safety reviews.
• Prepare safety lessons learned and shift-start communications.
• Present safety information during crew meetings and share lessons across the operation.
• Review and update job-specific safety plans and site procedures.
• Coordinate site prep for regulatory inspections and assist with field tours.
• Gather information and draft responses to regulatory questions for review by safety leadership.
• Partner with Operations to develop and implement actions addressing regulatory concerns.
• Prepare requisitions and maintain safety equipment and supplies.
• Develop and deliver task-specific health and safety training for employees and contractors.
• Coordinate safety orientations for new employees and contractors.
• Support EHS management-system activities and provide safety oversight in the site safety leader’s absence.
• Mentor hourly health and safety coordinators and provide guidance on safety processes and risk-control techniques.
