Job description

The State of Vermont Military Department is seeking a skilled Military Maintenance Specialist to join our team in South Burlington. This civilian military department position will have key responsibilities in these areas:

  • Structural Systems: Perform maintenance and repairs on structural systems, including roofs, walls, floors, and foundations. Conduct inspections and assessments to identify maintenance needs. Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules.
  • General Maintenance: Perform routine tasks such as replacing door handles and locks. Conduct repairs and replacements of structural components like doors and windows.
  • Administrative: Manage maintenance schedules and records. Order and inventory parts and materials. Prepare reports and documentation.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Ensure compliance with safety regulations and Air Force Standards. Assist other shops as needed. Be available for emergency call-ins after hours and on weekends.

This position requires a background check for base and government computer access, the ability to obtain and maintain security clearances, and a valid driver’s license. As of July 14, 2025, the pay rate for pay grade 19 step 1 will be $22.07/hour.

Environmental Factors: Work is performed at military facilities in Vermont, often near hazardous materials, confined spaces, and heavy equipment. Work requires climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in all weather conditions. Some outside work and travel may be required. Security clearance and heavy equipment certification within six months are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of experience in building construction, maintenance, or related fields, or one year as a Military Maintenance Specialist I.

Preferred Qualifications: Over five years of experience in building construction or maintenance, vocational education, military experience, experience on military installations, and possession of a CDL license.

Special Requirements: May require a Department of Defense CAC card and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
