Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through 12. The school has a current enrollment of approximately 900 students and 180 employees located on two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.

Job Summary:

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy seeks an energetic, creative, and passionate Middle School Visual Arts Teacher to inspire and engage students grade 6-8. The ideal candidate is well-versed in multiple art media - including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and graphic design. We are seeking a candidate who brings enthusiasm for fostering artistic expression , creativity, and appreciation of the arts.

As part of an independent school community, the teacher will have the opportunity to shape and innovate within the visual arts program in alignment with the school’s mission and values. The teacher must be a collaborative colleague and student-focused educator.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and instruct lessons for Middle School Art for various age level students in Middle School.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and growth-oriented classroom environment that encourages students to develop a love of art.
  • Interact effectively and maintain open communication with parents, students, faculty, staff and administration.
  • Work with the Visual Arts Department Chair and the Head of Middle School to order all supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for art related activities.
  • Work closely with the Visual Arts Department Chair, other Art instructors as well as other faculty and staff in the Upper and Lower Schools to advance the Visual Arts program.
  • Work with the Director of Communications & Public Relations and the Director of Admissions to promote awareness about the art program through school communications and other relevant audiences.
  • Utilize technology to enhance instruction.
  • Participate in divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities.
  • Contribute to the full life of the school through sponsoring student clubs and organizations, and coaching and/or building relationships within the local art community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administration and in accordance with the Employee Handbook and expectations of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
  • Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Visual Arts or Art Education or related field.
  • Valid Teaching Certificate in the content area of Art Education is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the knowledge and teaching of Visual Arts.
  • Prior experience as a Visual Arts educator is preferred, with 2-5 years experience.
  • Strong background in the infusion of technology into instructional practice.
  • Technology proficiency is essential including use of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, and the use of SmartBoards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with Google Educational Apps and Blackbaud experience preferred.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
