Saint Patrick Catholic School is seeking a passionate and innovative Art Teacher to inspire and guide our lower and middle school students in their artistic exploration and development for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Overview

Founded in 2005, Saint Patrick Catholic School (Norfolk, Virginia) is an independent Catholic school serving approximately 400 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Our dedicated faculty fosters a growth mindset and implements a holistic educational framework centered on six "pillars" that support the comprehensive development of each student. Saint Patrick Catholic School is a proud Glasser Quality School.

Faculty Expectations

  • Model Catholic faith and actively engage in service to the community.
  • Embrace and uphold the school’s vision of being authentically Catholic and warmly ecumenical.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to cultivate meaningful servant leadership opportunities.
  • Champion a culture of profound respect for all members of our diverse community.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a dynamic, sequential, and student-centered art curriculum for lower and middle school levels, aligned with best practices in art education, the school’s curriculum, and students' developmental stages. This includes fostering creativity, critical thinking, appreciation of art history, and development of technical skills across various media.
  • Cultivate a stimulating and inclusive classroom environment that prioritizes safety, respect, and growth. Encourage curiosity, experimentation, critical analysis, and a genuine love for the visual arts.
  • Employ a variety of authentic formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student progress, provide timely and constructive feedback, and assign grades in accordance with school policies and procedures. Assessment should reflect students' artistic growth, conceptual understanding, and effort.
  • Engage in continuous professional development by actively seeking out and participating in workshops, conferences, and professional learning communities to remain current with art practices, educational research, and innovative teaching methodologies in art education.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records of student progress, attendance, and grades. Communicate effectively with parents regarding student learning through progress reports, conferences, and other means as required by school procedures.
  • Foster strong home-school connections through clear and consistent communication with students and parents, encouraging their active involvement in the student's artistic journey and providing regular feedback on their progress.
  • Collaborate actively with the Visual Arts Department Chair and Director of Studies on curriculum review and development, the selection and maintenance of art supplies and equipment, and initiatives to promote and elevate the visual arts program within the school and the wider community.
  • Attend all scheduled faculty and department meetings and contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Participate fully in faith formation experiences offered by the school.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the school administration to support the overall functioning of the school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of art media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, digital art) and a strong understanding of art history and contemporary art practices.
  • Proven ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and artistic abilities of lower and middle school students.
  • Familiarity with national and state standards for art education (e.g., National Core Arts Standards).
  • Experience integrating technology effectively into art instruction.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 pounds, navigate stairs, and perform physical tasks related to classroom setup and art activities.
  • Strong commitment to serving as a positive role model for students, embodying creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

  • 2-4 years of successful teaching experience as a Visual Arts educator at the elementary or middle school level.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in educational technology.
  • Valid Virginia Department of Education license (preferred) or eligibility for licensure.
