Crystal Lake School District 47 currently has an opening for a Middle School Dean of Students. The Dean of Students works with the Principal in carrying out the school’s behavior programs. As a professional educator, the Dean of Students understands and responds to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. The Dean of Students provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ personal and social development. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, nurse, staff, students, and parents towards a positive school climate. We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the District’s diverse populations.

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration and Organization
  • Serves as a resource for building staff, administrators, and parents in working with students, creating a positive school climate, and helping students develop a positive self-concept.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully and positively with all students to provide them with assistance in meeting their educational needs.
  • Coordinates and implements disciplinary intervention steps, including PBIS processes with staff and works closely with the principal.
  • Must possess the ability to interpret attendance data accurately. Coordinates and implements attendance intervention steps, including but not limited to holding attendance conferences, making home visits, and contacting students and parents to discuss attendance irregularities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with clarity and conciseness.
  • Motivates students in a positive direction, which will help students to increase individual decision-making responsibilities.
  • Follows Board policies and keeps abreast of updates and changes.
  • Effectively manages conflict within the school building.
  • Reports issues to authorities as necessary, including child abuse, suspicious activity, etc.
  • Serves as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues.
  • Enforces school behavioral expectations and assigns appropriate consequences for behavior.
  • Assists staff and parents in developing student behavioral expectations as well as intervention strategies (PBIS).
  • Complies with applicable state, local, and federal laws.
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints.
  • Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, and passing periods.
  • Works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Student Management
  • The Dean of Students shall be responsible for the attendance, conduct, and discipline of students at the middle school.
  • The Dean of Students shall provide support and leadership for staff members in the enforcement of building rules and regulations.
  • The Dean of Students shall be responsible for the supervision of hallways.
  • The Dean of Students shall be responsible for the supervision of the lunchroom.
  • The Dean of Students shall coordinate the attendance policy for the middle school.
  • The Dean of Students shall file timely truancy reports and communications with appropriate agencies, individuals, and parents.
  • The Dean of Students shall provide building supervision.
Information Collection and Sharing
  • Store and maintain all records on student discipline and parent communication in the designated school database.
  • Track, evaluate, and report behavior trends through collection and analysis of detailed data.
  • Assist in planning and delivering professional development content related to school culture, student behavior, and appropriate policies.
Discipline
  • Implement a behavior management system and restorative justice practices.
  • Oversee day-to-day disciplinary issues in the Middle School, working closely with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with school policies.
  • Communicate clearly and in a timely fashion, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, and appropriate school staff regarding any disciplinary event or consequence.
  • Keep accurate records regarding disciplinary infractions and consequences.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License.
  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Five years demonstrated successful teaching and/or counseling experience at the middle school level preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in managing and interacting with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict through quality decision-making and effective problem-solving.
