About The Lycée
The Lycée Français de Chicago provides its students with a rigorous bilingual education in a dynamic and welcoming multicultural community. The Lycée’s education transforms students into global ambassadors, inspiring them to lead lives of purpose, responsibility and respect. First founded in 1995 by a small group of French and American families, the Lycée began as an international school of fewer than 150 students. Over twenty-five years later, our community has grown dramatically to over 750 students, attracting families from around the world who share the value of an academically challenging and culturally diverse education.
The Position
The Dean of Students - Middle School is in charge of supervising middle school students when they are not under the responsibility of a teacher. They ensure the safety and well-being of students and contribute to their personal development and growth, in compliance with the LFC values and regulations. They work in close cooperation and collaboration with staff, administrators, and parents to advance the interests of students, their successes, and their well-being. The Dean of Students - Middle School supervises the school life staff under their authority and organizes the applicable services.
Responsibilities:
GENERAL ORGANISATION
- Be an active presence throughout the school day, particularly during less structured times.
- Track student absences and tardiness, in collaboration with the Middle School Supervisor
- Coordinate with the MS Supervisor to cover all student retake exams. Serve as an exam supervisor when the MS Supervisor is not available
- Supervise daily recess periods (morning recess and first lunch recess), welcome students during first period, and dismiss them each day.
- Supervise class whenever needed, for example, when a teacher is absent and no subs or supervisors are available.
- Manage the outdoor student spaces, as well as classrooms, corridors, multipurpose room, lounges, bathrooms, courtyard, and cafeteria to optimize the students’ on-campus traffic.
- Conduct an annual revision of the student Handbook.
- Implement any new policies established by either the Associate Director of Middle School or Director of Secondary School and ensure strong lines of communication between students and administration.
SCHOOL LIFE
- Establish a student culture that develops the students’ sense of responsibility, their cultural awareness, and the spirit of the school.
- Ensure student safety and well-being through frequent visibility on the middle school floor and throughout school facilities.
- Listen to the students with a sympathetic ear and establish a constructive dialogue with parents when needed.
- Establish and enforce rules and take necessary measures based on school rules and policies, restorative justice practices, and positive discipline.
- Prevent and handle conflicts in an educational way.
- Initiate any necessary written or verbal communication with parents to prevent problems or in relation to student disrespect or rule violations at school. Meet with students and families as deemed necessary to create plans for student success.
- Provide leadership during student emergency situations that require immediate action. Coordinate follow-up of school administration to ensure student safety.
- Organizing special events such as homecoming, integration, dances, Halloween... with the help of students and the Lycée community.
STUDENT SUPPORT
- Work closely with teachers and the associate Director of Middle School to support the appropriate plan (PPRE) for students with learning or socio-emotional difficulties
- Support, facilitate and encourage student involvement in school activities. Serve as the primary advisor for the Student Government (CVC). Partner with the Student Activities Coordinator to establish shared meetings with the High School Student Government (CVL). Conduct preparation meetings with the Director of Secondary School in order to prepare for successful and engaging (quarterly) Conseil d’Etablissement meetings.
- Order and maintain equipment that is necessary for the community engagement of students during recess and lunch periods. Assess needs through CVC and make recommendations for new equipment to improve student engagement.
- Work in collaboration with the Diversity Manager to plan and implement diversity and inclusion programming that promotes school values and influences school culture. Co-Advise Project Co-Exist (Student diversity and inclusion organization).
- Contribute to the Middle School Assembly Schedule, provide leadership to some Middle School Assemblies (this can include Middle School assemblies and Middle School community meetings, guest presenters and small group exercises, for example).
- Provide co-leadership to the Middle School Advisory program.
MANAGEMENT
- Organize and oversee the Middle School Supervisor’s work
- Consult and update Pronote daily for student follow-up and communication purposes
- Create and maintain electronic and paper student files (attendance, discipline, etc.)
- Lead special committees that enhance school life and spirit (as deemed appropriate by the Secondary School Director; e.g., Assembly Committee, Spirit Wear Committee)
- Other duties as assigned by the Secondary School Director
Requirements
- The ideal candidate is a flexible, organized, and independent team player.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust with students.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience working with middle and high school student issues preferred; prior experience working in a school environment is a plus.
- Fluent in English, with knowledge and understanding of the French language and culture a plus.
Additional Information
- The schedule is 8am - 5pm and onsite at the school, including direct support, coordination, and follow-up with staff and families
- The annual salary is 75-83k and the role is benefits eligible: medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403b with match, and tuition remission.
