Position Purpose
To develop students' interest, abilities, talents and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to performing assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
Essential Functions
- Develops and administers school art curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to optimize art instruction time.
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary pupils, following the adopted course of study, and other appropriate activities.
- Provides instruction to develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art and art appreciation.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and modifies instructional methods to meet individual needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using instructional aids.
- Develops instructional plans and organizes class time for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and practice.
- Instructs students on proper use and care of art tools and equipment.
- Evaluates student performance and growth, and prepares progress reports.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work for the school and community; may sponsor external exhibits.
- Continuously updates professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, research, and current educational developments.
- Maintains accurate records of student activities, achievements, and attendance as per district policies and laws.
- Encourages parental involvement and maintains effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures student conduct aligns with school standards and policies; maintains a positive learning environment.
- Collaborates with other staff members, participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Requisitions and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
Additional Duties
Performs other tasks as assigned by the Principal and administrators.
Equipment
Uses standard office and school equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones.
Travel Requirements
Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as needed.
Work Schedule
Follows the standard teacher work schedule as outlined in the Teachers' Unit Contract.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of current art instructional methods and pedagogy, including differentiation based on learning styles.
- Knowledge of art curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of applicable laws regarding education and students.

Certification/License
- State Certification as an Art Teacher or as required.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in relevant education discipline from an accredited institution.
- Master's degree preferred.
Experience
Prior teaching experience at the appropriate grade level or subject is a plus.
