Job Description

Equality Charter School is an innovative, high-performing, and growing charter school serving the Bronx community. We are currently seeking a 6-8 Math SPED Teacher to support our middle school campus. At Equality Charter Middle School (ECMS), we pride ourselves on being a true community school—one that provides scholars with a well-rounded educational experience grounded in academic rigor, social-emotional awareness, and love.

The ideal candidate is deeply aligned with these core values and demonstrates that alignment consistently through their practice, relationships, and daily presence within the school community.

Responsibilities for this position are varied and include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a key team member, striving to collaborate whenever possible
  • Participate in professional development opportunities that are either presented by Equality or independently identified
  • Participate in and contribute to teacher team meetings, PLC meetings, data inquiry team meetings and coaching meetings (collaboration with instructional coaches)
  • Two free prep periods per day
  • Develop daily lesson plans
  • Collaborate with co‑teachers and other support staff to ensure all students’ needs are met
  • Maintain a highly‑engaged classroom setting that promotes good order and a love of learning
  • Highlight student voices and promote student‑led discovery of meaning
  • May be asked to serve as an advisor in tandem with a co‑advisor by leading a daily advisory class focused on the underlying soft skills that all students need to succeed in academia, in career, and in life
  • Complete all grades and comments in a timely fashion
  • Use data to drive instructional decisions

At Equality Charter Middle School, the role of the classroom teacher is intentionally designed to differ from that of many other schools. Teachers serve as the deans of their own classrooms, holding primary responsibility for both academic instruction and the social‑emotional culture of their learning environment. Our program is structured to provide educators with the time, focus, and support needed to excel as core academic instructors while also serving as strong, consistent social‑emotional leaders for their scholars. We deliberately minimize competing demands so teachers can build deep expertise in the foundational content areas that drive all learning, while also maintaining clear ownership over classroom routines, relationships, and expectations. The responsibilities and time allocations associated with this role reflect a clear and purposeful instructional priority, reinforcing teachers’ authority and accountability as the instructional and cultural leaders of their classrooms.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate brings both heart and skill to their work and demonstrates a deep commitment to our scholars and community. Desired qualifications include:

  • A compassionate, scholar‑centered approach grounded in passion and purpose
  • A results‑oriented mindset with a strong focus on scholar growth and achievement
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate reading and writing strategies into classroom instruction effectively
  • Experience designing and facilitating hands‑on, cooperative, and engaging learning experiences
  • A proven record of success working with Equality’s scholar population or similar communities
  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including English Language Learners, scholars with disabilities, general education scholars, and gifted scholars
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a history of meaningful collaboration with colleagues, families, and scholars
  • Clear, effective communication skills, including strong writing and presentation abilities
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and follow‑through
  • A proactive, reflective, and creative problem‑solver who takes initiative
  • Openness to feedback and a commitment to continuous growth and improvement
  • A collaborative team player who is also able to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
  • Strong professional references from prior supervisors and colleagues
