Job summary

SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital – Madison in Wisconsin is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Microbiology to examine cultures, identify pathogens and provide accurate diagnostic data for patient care.

Under general direction you will perform routine and complex analyses, interpret results, and communicate findings to physicians. A Bachelor's degree is required; no prior experience is necessary.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience and education.

Responsibilities

• Identify and isolate infectious disease organisms; perform a full range of laboratory tests.
• Recognize unusual antimicrobial susceptibility results and troubleshoot the issue.
• Conduct examinations on specimens collected from patients for bacterial, viral, protozoan and fungal infections.
• Isolate and culture bacteria or other microorganisms in prescribed media, controlling moisture, aeration, temperature, and nutrition.
• Receive and analyze laboratory specimens and report results in a timely manner.
• Interpret test reports and communicate findings to physicians; escalate unusual/abnormal results.
• Operate complex electronic equipment and precision instruments; perform quality control procedures.
• Maintain equipment/reagents through preventive maintenance; assist in selecting appropriate lab tests.
