MHA Paraprofessional Responsibilities

Assist the Teacher in individual and group instruction, assist with daily living skills, and provide personal care instruction to students under the direct supervision of the special education teacher.

Educational / Work History Requirements

Instructional Paraprofessionals are not required to be licensed in the Commonwealth. The minimum requirements to be employed in this role are:

• Possession of an Associate's (or higher) degree OR
• Completion of at least two years or 48 credit hours of study at an institution of higher education.
• An assessment by the Director or Assistant Director of Education measuring one’s knowledge of and ability to assist classroom teachers in reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Teaching/instruction experience and demonstrated competency as determined by the Special Education Director or Assistant Director of Education.

Essential Duties of the Position

1. Provide one‑on‑one support academic, vocational, daily living, and behavioral support for students.
2. Assist in the educational and social development of the students under the direction and guidance of the classroom teacher.
3. Assist the Teacher and Teacher’s Assistant with classroom management and organization, including material and academic task preparation, copying items to support teaching, and assisting in preparing and displaying student work.
4. Assist in implementing Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress. Provide support for individual students inside and outside of the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
5. Assist in learning centers such as a computer laboratory and library, as well as in the cafeteria, gymnasium, exercise room, reward areas of the school building, and playgrounds.
6. Complete necessary paperwork on time, e.g., multiday lists, GED log sheets, weight charts, and attendance charts when assigned by the teacher.
7. Responsible for inputting information into various online databases and forms.
8. Follow students’ behavioral programs as written in the treatment plan and arrange appropriate consequences.
9. Be willing to learn about the JRC students, their disabilities, and the forms of treatment provided at JRC.
10. Be responsible for the safety and welfare of the JRC students.
11. Understand the gravity of their responsibility for the safety and care of the JRC students and be willing to perform their duties diligently.
12. Know where each student is at all times and take a head count at random times while emergency evacuation drills are being held.
13. When necessary, must be able to physically restrain assaultive students (with possible assistance of one or several staff members) after training.
14. When required, attend meetings held by the Special Education Director or their designee.
15. Suggest changes in student’s behavioral and/or educational program to supervisor.
16. Assist with transport of students to and from medical appointments when asked.
17. Assist in loading and unloading the vans and buses in the morning and afternoon.
18. Submit request/suggestion forms to the Special Education Director or their designee regarding supplies needed.
19. Read JRC Discussion Board and post a minimum of 3 messages every quarter.
20. Participate in at least two hours per month of in‑service training.
21. Engage in incidental learning whenever possible.
22. Report damage (to include property that has been exposed to any bodily fluids/secretion) to JRC property.
23. Report abuse to JRC and appropriate agencies.
24. Have a working telephone so they may be contacted.
