Financial Risk and Capital Management

The Investment Risk Officer is responsible for providing expertise on investment risks within the organization by developing and implementing second line of defense reports, systems, and processes and by leveraging automation and Artificial Intelligence tools. As a subject matter expert in insurance company risk management and related technology toolsets, this job manages risk and reviews processes related to monitoring, reporting and managing capital and liquidity adequacy.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Portfolio Risk Monitoring and Analysis: Prepare detailed quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc risk reports and presentations for senior management and investment committees. Maintain and continuously improve risk reporting templates, dashboards, and documentation standards across asset classes. Support comprehensive risk assessments of existing portfolio positions and new investment opportunities. Translate outputs from TIAA's tail risk framework and quantitative risk models into accessible written commentary and presentation materials, working closely with quantitatively focused risk colleagues who own the underlying modeling. Proactively identify and implement AI and automation opportunities to streamline recurring reporting tasks, such as automated summarization of manager/advisor quarterly portfolio letters, data extraction from GP reports, and first-draft narrative generation for committee materials. Support the annual investment risk limit review process by compiling utilization data, drafting limit breach narratives, and preparing escalation documentation for governance committees. Track and document due diligence findings, deal structure summaries, and risk characteristics for new investment opportunities as communicated by investment teams, maintaining a clear audit trail for governance purposes. Assist in the preparation of materials for rating agency engagements, regulatory inquiries, and internal audit reviews related to investment risk oversight. Monitor emerging risks, particularly rapid growth impacts in private markets and AI bubble. Assist stress testing and scenario analysis across alternative asset classes.

Risk Framework: Support monitoring of TIAA's tail risk framework across alternative investment asset classes. Analyze simulation outputs from risk and private and public data analytics. Monitor compliance with risk limits (both notional and tail risk) within TIAA's established risk appetite framework.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with quantitative support teams and other risk management functions. Support quarterly and annual risk reporting processes. Collaborate with offshore team members and provide guidance on analytical tasks. Coordinate with offshore team members and cross-functional stakeholders and quantitative support teams to gather inputs, validate figures, and meet reporting deadlines. Work closely with Asset Class Risk Managers and investment teams to understand deal structures, due diligence processes, and risk characteristics.

Systems & Technology: Proactively incorporate AI/LLM tools for enhanced analytical capabilities. Advanced utilization of Excel for complex financial modeling and analysis. Work with large datasets and various risk management platforms. Leverage different Risk models and systems.

Career Level 8IC REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of relevant experience in investment risk management, asset management, institutional investing, or related fields. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 7+ years of relevant experience in investment risk management, asset management, institutional investing, or related fields. Bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Finance, Economics, Actuarial Science, or related field). Graduate degree (MBA, MS, MA in relevant field). CFA, FRM, ASA, FSA, PhD, CPA, or other relevant professional certifications.

TECHINCAL SKILLS: Advanced Excel proficiency (required). Experience working with large datasets and financial databases. Programming skills (Python, R, SQL, VBA) a plus. Proactive user of AI/LLM tools with demonstrated advanced use cases. Familiarity with risk management systems and platforms.

KNOWLEDGE AREAS: Strong understanding of fixed income and equity markets, with real assets knowledge a significant plus. Exposure to private markets (Private Equity, Infrastructure, Real Estate, Private Credit). Understanding of global markets and multiple economic sectors. Familiarity with insurance company regulatory frameworks (RBC, etc.).

Base Pay Range: $135,000/yr - $192,000/yr. Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
