Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking a hands-on Metrologist / CMM Programmer to support Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Engineering, and Quality teams onsite in California. You will interpret drawings and GD&T, determine measurement strategies, and develop CMM programs to evaluate parts.

This role emphasizes building metrology methods, documentation, and guidance for inspectors and engineers. CMM programming experience with PC-DMIS, Calypso, Verisurf, or PolyWorks is preferred.

Job description

Contract Length: 12 months from start date

Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM

Work Arrangement: Onsite, 5 days/week

Pay: ($44-$47/hour)

About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Metrologist / CMM Programmer to support Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Engineering, and Quality teams.

This position is ideal for someone who can take a new or prototype component, interpret the engineering drawing and GD&T requirements, determine the appropriate measurement approach, and develop the CMM program and inspection methodology needed to evaluate the part.

This is not primarily a Quality Inspector position. The successful candidate will help establish metrology methods, programs, documentation, and guidance that inspectors and engineering teams can use consistently.

Any hands-on CMM programming experience will be considered. Mitutoyo MCOSMOS experience is preferred but not required. Candidates experienced with PC-DMIS, Calypso, Verisurf, PolyWorks, or similar CMM platforms are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and create CMM programs for new and existing components
• Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, datums, and dimensional requirements
• Determine appropriate measurement and inspection methods for prototype and production parts
• Perform precision measurements using CMMs, optical comparators, vision systems, gauges, and other metrology equipment
• Develop and validate inspection methods for new/prototype components
• Support Product Development with measurement feasibility and inspection requirements
• Support First Article, receiving, in-process, and final inspection activities
• Create and maintain SOPs, work instructions, inspection procedures, and measurement documentation
• Support dimensional root cause analysis and quality problem solving
• Work with suppliers and internal engineering teams to address measurement and dimensional issues
• Analyze measurement data and recommend process or inspection improvements
• Help build internal metrology capability and reduce reliance on external metrology resources

Required Qualifications

• Hands-on CMM programming experience on any major CMM platform
• Strong knowledge of GD&T
• Ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
• Ability to understand a new component and determine an appropriate measurement/inspection strategy
• Experience with dimensional inspection and precision measurement equipment
• Experience using multiple measurement tools such as optical comparators, vision systems, gauges, calipers, micrometers, or similar equipment
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Supplier teams
• Strong documentation and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with PC-DMIS, Calypso, Verisurf, PolyWorks, Zeiss, Hexagon, or similar systems
• Experience developing inspection programs/methods for new or prototype parts
• First Article Inspection (FAI) experience
• Receiving inspection experience
• Quality systems or measurement systems experience
• SOP and work instruction development experience
• Training or informal leadership experience
• ASQ, MSA, metrology, or advanced measurement training/certifications
• Vocational/technical training or equivalent hands-on experience
• Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of related experience is a plus, not a requirement
