The Hearst Newspapers’ San Francisco Chronicle is seeking a Metro Reporting Intern for Summer 2027. This 12-week paid internship trains and mentors interns while they report on a range of stories in a fast-paced, digitally focused metro team.

We’re looking for a reporter to join our fast-paced, digitally focused metro team for 12 weeks in the summer of 2027. The intern will receive training and mentoring but also hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories. Areas of coverage could include city government and policy, neighborhood trends, transit, housing and breaking news. The ideal candidate will hustle, work quickly and compete to be first on stories. We need someone with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills and is comfortable providing and taking feedback.
The internship offers numerous training opportunities, including brown bag lunches and mentoring from senior reporters and editors. Interns are also often assigned to help alongside seasoned reporters on some of the biggest breaking news events we cover.
The internship is paid at an hourly rate of $20.50/hr. Deadline to apply is October 10, 2026.
