Job summary

Chronicle in San Francisco seeks a junior designer/developer to contribute across reporting, design, and front-end coding for newsroom projects.

You'll create visuals, write and code as needed, and help manage production with collaborators. Proficiency in HTML/CSS, JavaScript/React, and data visualization is essential; experience with Figma, ArchieML, and DataWrapper is a plus.

Qualifications

• Must be a college junior, senior or recent graduate at time of application.
• Interest in journalism and/or design demonstrated by coursework or practical experience at student publications or professional internships.
• Must be able to work in the Chronicle’s San Francisco office at least three days a week.
• Basic understanding of HTML and CSS.
• Basic reporting and writing for accuracy, brevity and clarity.
• Knowledge of news design techniques.
• Visual, UI/UX and/or product design, including typography, color and grid.
• Ability to use Adobe Creative Suite and Figma.
• Development experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript and React, with version management via Git and GitHub.
• Knowledge of news tools such as ArchieML and AI2HTML.
• Data reporting and analysis via Python or R; Python preferred.
• Data visualization via DataWrapper or D3
• Experience or skills in Three.js, illustration, animation/motion, video, or social media design.
