Job summary

The City of Greensboro is seeking a dependable Meter Services Technician to support safe, reliable water service for the community. You will perform meter-related fieldwork, investigate leaks, and ensure water quality and system integrity while engaging with customers in a professional manner.

You will apply AWWA standards and backflow precautions, coordinate with the Water Resources Department, and work on a schedule that includes field activities across Greensboro.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; relevant technical experience valued.
• NC AWWA certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
• Valid driver’s license required for field service work.

Compensation and Benefits

Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $44,000.00 - $50,286.00

Full Salary Range: $41,600.00 - $68,389.00 Annually

About the Role

As a Meter Services Technician, you will perform a variety of technical field activities related to water meters, customer water services, backflow prevention, water quality, and system testing. You will interact with the public on a regular basis and use independent judgment while following established policies, procedures, and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include

• Perform water meter change-outs and related installation and maintenance activities.
• Detect and investigate leaks on water services and mains.
• Investigate customer “bad water” calls and assist with identifying potential water quality concerns.
• Set permit meters and perform related inspections.
• Inspect and test backflow prevention devices.
• Flush and test fire hydrants.
• Perform flow tests on water services.
• Apply American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards related to testing, repairing, and installing water meters.
• Apply Backflow and Cross Connection standards when installing, testing, and repairing backflow devices.
• Follow applicable confined space rules and regulations.
• Read and interpret strip maps and water block sheets to support field activities.
• Apply minimum water quality standards to assigned work.
• Troubleshoot service and equipment issues and reason through problems to determine appropriate solutions.
• Exercise independent judgment while following Water Resources policies, City policies, procedures, and City ordinances.
• Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
• Follow written and verbal instructions and maintain organized records and work activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• Valid Driver's License
• NC AWWA Meter Services Technician Certification (must obtain within 18 months of employment to remain in the position)
• 1+ years of experience working in a technical field, with activities related to water meters, customer water services, backflow prevention, water quality, and system testing.

Preferred Qualifications

• NC AWWA Meter Services Technician Certification.
• Experience with Meter Viewer or other utility asset locating software.
• Experience with routing software to aid in service address locating.
