Qualifications

Position Overview/Responsibilities Overview
  • Provides centralized meteorological support to all FE business units
  • Provide air quality modeling, policy, regulatory, and technical support.
  • Provide weather forecast support for weather events capable of disrupting power.
  • Provide briefings and presentations as required, including briefings to senior leadership.
  • Provide medium range forecast support.
  • Provide one- and two-month temperature anomaly forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain computer programs to create products that support FirstEnergy’s internal customer’s needs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on climatological and meteorological studies.
  • Provide expert guidance for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the weather component of the Storm Impact model (outage prediction).
  • Support Wildfire Program Strategy
Responsibilities
  • Utilize a variety of products, software, and tools to support FE Weathers mission:
    • Develop and maintain support tools and software platforms.
    • Assure that meteorological data imported from the NOAA National Weather Service, international meteorological agencies, and private vendors to produce tailored products for FE is operational and accurate.
    • Develop and maintain automated methods that utilize available data to address past, current, and future weather conditions.
    • Work with FE IT to assess and procure computer hardware upgrades.
  • Develop and maintain methods allowing FEWX to continually advance its predictive and assessment capabilities through applied research and development efforts, often through collaboration with NOAA, EPRI, and surrounding universities which enhances already strong connections within the meteorological community.
  • Participate in Storm calls providing guidance on developing weather conditions.
  • Review and update FE Weather procedures and protocols.
  • Plan and coordinate internal weather suite training programs.

Be available for off-hours and weekend support.

Education & Certifications
Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.
  • At least 5 years professional experience in operational forecasting.
  • Ability to analyze real-time and prognostic meteorological data at different temporal and spatial scales.
  • Ability to provide meteorological support to key decision-makers on an ad hoc basis during high impact events.
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in meteorology or Atmospheric Science or equivalent.
