Job summary

WCYB-TV News 5, the NBC and FOX affiliate serving the Tri-Cities, is seeking a Meteorologist/Reporter who combines weather forecasting with storytelling across broadcast, digital, and social platforms.

You will forecast and present weathercasts, deliver timely warnings, create compelling weather graphics, and report on weather and environmental stories for local audiences with a strong community focus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field.
  • 1–2 years of full-time weather forecasting, presentation, and reporting preferred.
  • Strong forecasting knowledge and ability to write clearly under deadline.

WCYB-TV News 5, the NBC and FOX affiliate serving the Tri-Cities, is seeking a Meteorologist/Reporter who is passionate about accurate forecasting, impactful storytelling, and serving the community. This role combines weather forecasting, reporting, and content creation across broadcast, digital, and social media platforms to deliver meaningful coverage that informs, engages, and connects with viewers.

Main day to day responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to:
  • Forecast, produce, and present compelling weathercasts that combine accurate forecasting with forward-thinking storytelling to help viewers understand what's ahead and how it may affect their lives.
  • Issue timely warnings and alerts, create compelling weather graphics and maps, and deliver confident live coverage during severe weather and other significant weather events.
  • Contribute to the station's social media coverage during severe weather and create engaging weather content for broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
  • Develop story ideas, cultivate community sources, and report on weather, environmental, and general news stories that inform and impact local audiences.
  • Collaborate with producers and newsroom staff to identify and deliver relevant weather coverage for both breaking news and everyday forecasts.
  • Adapt to a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended coverage during significant weather events.
  • Represent the station at community events and public appearances, serving as a trusted ambassador for a brand with a 70-year legacy of serving the community.
What skills do you need to be successful in our role?
  • Ability to tell memorable and meaningful stories through compelling weather coverage across broadcast, digital, and social media platforms.
  • Experience delivering engaging live reports and active, visual coverage during significant weather events and extended severe weather coverage.
  • Strong knowledge of short-term, long-range, and impact-based forecasting.
  • Sound news judgment and the ability to write clear, accurate, and engaging content under deadline.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt quickly to changing conditions, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • One to two years of full-time experience in weather forecasting, presentation, and reporting preferred. Recent graduates with strong forecasting, storytelling, and on-air skills are encouraged to apply.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a newsroom environment and perform effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Familiarity with The Weather Company (formerly WSI) weather systems and forecasting tools is strongly preferred.

The base hourly compensation range for this role is $16.00 to $19.00 per hour. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidates' relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. Full time positions are eligible for benefits that include participation in a retirement plan, life and disability insurance, health, dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, sick leave, vacation time, personal time, parental leave and employee stock purchase plan.
