Job summary

Nucor Steel South Carolina (Darlington) is seeking a Metallurgist to perform direct process/metallurgy work, lead product and process improvements, and address customer issues across the plant. The role expects problem-solving, training teammates, and supporting continuous improvement of the quality system.

You may be asked to train into rolling process engineer/metallurgical positions and to travel to customer sites or other Nucor locations as business requires.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or a related engineering or scientific discipline.
• Minimum of two years of direct process manufacturing experience in the steelmaking industry, including rolling, melting, or bar products.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of steelmaking, refining, casting, and/or rolling processes.

Responsibilities

• Direct process/product metallurgy, process/product improvements, and problem-solving projects throughout the facility.
• Address customer complaints and claims resolution; provide metallurgical assistance and training to teammates and technical service representatives.
• Support production outside normal business hours and travel to customer or Nucor locations as needed.

Education

Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Steel South Carolina (Darlington) is seeking a Metallurgist interested in taking on a technical role based upon the needs of the plant and the candidate’s experience. Job functions will be a direct process/product metallurgy, product/process improvements, problem-solving projects throughout the facility, and customer complaints and claims resolution. Other functions may include grade development for specialized applications, providing training to teammates, metallurgical assistance to technical service representatives and customers, and continuous improvement of the quality management system. Must be willing to support production outside normal business hours and travel to customer or Nucor locations as business needs require.

This candidate will be expected to train into a rolling process engineer/metallurgical position or melt shop process/metallurgical engineering position.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. (Nucor will not sponsor the need for a visa now or in the future).

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or a related engineering or scientific discipline.
• Minimum of two (2) years of direct process manufacturing experience in the steelmaking industry, including experience with rolling, melting, or bar products. Relevant Nucor internship experience will be applied toward this requirement.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of steelmaking, refining, casting, and/or rolling processes.

Preferences:

• Preferred Experience: 2 or more years in metallurgy, materials engineering, manufacturing, quality, or related technical disciplines.
• Wire rod product experience, special bar quality exposure on automotive quality, non-destructive testing (eddy or ultrasonic) of round bar.
