Job Title: Process Engineer (Metallurgical)
Location: Onsite – Peoria, IL
Contract duration: 12 month contract with potential to extend or convert
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Process Engineer to support manufacturing shop operations and lead engineering projects in a heavy industrial environment. This role will be responsible for managing projects from concept through commissioning, providing technical expertise in metallurgical and mechanical processes, and supporting manufacturing operations through troubleshooting, process improvement, and capital project execution. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in manufacturing or industrial equipment environments, with knowledge of metallurgical processes, mechanical systems, project execution, and cross-functional engineering collaboration. This position will work closely with operations, quality, maintenance, suppliers, contractors, and engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and effective solutions.
Project Execution
- Lead and execute engineering projects from concept through commissioning and handover.
- Develop and manage project scope, schedules, budgets, action items, and risk mitigation plans.
- Support capital equipment installation, modification, startup, and commissioning activities.
- Coordinate project activities with operations, quality, maintenance, suppliers, contractors, and engineering teams.
- Manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while maintaining project schedules and deliverables.
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
- Apply metallurgical principles related to steel, cast iron, alloys, heat treatment, and forming processes.
- Support material selection, process qualification, metallurgical validation, and manufacturing process improvements.
- Perform or coordinate metallurgical analysis, including microstructure evaluation, hardness testing, mechanical testing, and failure analysis.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities related to material or process issues.
- Analyze manufacturing and test data to identify opportunities for process improvement.
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
- Support the design and evaluation of mechanical systems, including piping, fluid systems, quench systems, fixtures, equipment, and manufacturing layouts.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, and equipment designs.
- Evaluate equipment capability, reliability, safety, and manufacturing performance.
- Interface with controls, electrical, automation, and manufacturing teams to develop integrated solutions.
- Provide technical support during production trials, troubleshooting activities, and manufacturing ramp‑up.
Manufacturing and Operations Support
- Provide hands‑on engineering support to manufacturing operations and shop‑floor activities.
- Troubleshoot equipment, process, material, and production‑related issues.
- Ensure engineering solutions meet applicable safety, quality, regulatory, and operational requirements.
- Develop and review technical documentation, engineering standards, work instructions, and project documentation.
- Support continuous improvement and process optimization initiatives.
Communication and Leadership
- Serve as the technical point of contact for assigned engineering projects.
- Communicate project status, technical findings, risks, and next steps to cross‑functional teams and leadership.
- Coordinate and manage external suppliers, contractors, and engineering service providers.
- Participate in design reviews, project meetings, technical discussions, and supplier coordination activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering discipline.
- Associate degree with 7+ years of relevant engineering experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
- Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience may be considered.
- Approximately 5–7 years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, industrial equipment, or a similar environment.
- Working knowledge of metallurgical processes and materials behavior.
- Experience with mechanical systems design, evaluation, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and industrial operations.
- Knowledge of project management fundamentals, including scope, schedule, cost, and risk management.
- Experience coordinating suppliers, contractors, and cross‑functional teams.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and structured problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Strong technical communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with heat treatment equipment or processes.
- Experience with steel, forging, casting, surface treatment, or other metal processing operations.
- Experience supporting capital equipment projects, plant installations, or manufacturing facility modifications.
- Familiarity with mechanical design tools such as AutoCAD, Creo, or similar software.
- Experience with quality systems, validation, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience working in operations‑focused, cross‑functional manufacturing environments.
