Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Scientific Engineering Associate to advance mass spectrometry workflows in a high-throughput metabolomics setting in Berkeley, CA. You will develop, optimize, and supervise LC-MS methods, onboard new Thermo Orbitrap instrumentation, and ensure data quality across large sample throughput.

The role combines hands-on instrument operation with mentoring junior staff, coordinating with internal and external partners, and delivering results for JGI

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Engineering, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or related field and 3 years of experience in the job offered or in a related occupation.
• MS instrumentation: Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting Thermo Orbitrap ESI-LC-MS/MS mass spectrometry instrumentation such as IQ-X or Exploris mass spectrometers.
• Metabolomics sample processing equipment including UHPLC, SpeedVacs, lyophilizers, centrifuges, N2 generators on a daily basis.

Responsibilities

• Develop, optimize, and standardize LC-MS workflows for high-throughput metabolomics.
• Onboard new mass spectrometry instrumentation and protocols and integrate into high-throughput production workflows.
• Monitor and ensure adherence to production metrics for high-throughput metabolomics workflows.
• Perform both standard and custom mass spectrometry data analysis.
• Prepare results for JGI users and collaborators.
• Manage day-to-day laboratory operations including instrument scheduling, inventory, and safety.
