GENERAL SUMMARY & SCOPE
The Merchandise Manager (MM) is responsible for leading through Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values and contributing to a high-performing team that consistently delivers top-line sales growth for the store. The MM reports to the Operations Manager (OM). The MM guides a team of Task Associates and is accountable for supporting the operations of a retail store, including shipment process, replenishment, omni-channel, price changes, and markdowns. This leader drives the store’s business through a focus on performance (sales, inventory results, and operational compliance), people (training and development), and process (standard operating procedures and compliance standards). This position requires a passion for operational excellence, a drive for results, and the ability to lead efficiently through unforeseen complexity.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The MM is a champion of Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values, demonstrating them consistently by performing the following duties and responsibilities, as well as other projects/duties as assigned:
Performance
- Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed the store’s goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty (including credit), payroll, omni-channel, and retail shrink as set by Ulta Beauty.
- Drive company profitability through operational excellence, top-line sales growth, and expense control.
- Leverage store forecast and payroll budgets to support store scheduling needs, communicating with the GM to maximize productivity and achieve sales and payroll goals while completing workload on time and within budget.
- Review, analyze, and react to Ulta Beauty’s financial and operational reports, including store visits and audit results, regularly and promptly.
- Utilize company programs, tools, and resources to improve store performance and meet Ulta Beauty’s goals.
- Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to enhance guest experience and drive sales.
- Stay informed about industry trends, products, and services, and be knowledgeable about their ingredients and benefits to better serve guests.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance as the MM and hold store associates accountable to attendance policies.

- Ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
- Adhere to and enforce the dress code.
- Use scheduling and task management tools to manage store workload and attendance.
- Ensure execution of operational focuses, including shipment, replenishment, omni-channel, price changes, and markdowns.
- Protect company assets and minimize loss by meeting store standards and operating procedures, including safety, inventory control, cash management, and loss prevention.
- Manage inventory control processes and theft reporting as necessary.
- Support continuous improvement by adopting company initiatives and technology, communicating expectations, and executing store tasks.
- Use company resources to enhance store performance and communicate business trends and challenges to leadership.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma preferred
Experience
- 1-2+ years in retail management or relevant experience
- Financial management skills including sales growth, data interpretation, payroll management, and expense control
- Proven retail management skills in inventory, operations, service culture, and merchandising
- Leadership experience in talent development, change management, and team influence
Skills
- Proficiency with technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices)
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
- Organizational skills for multitasking
- Ability to react under pressure, exercise good judgment, and adapt to change
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Flexible, full-time schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work shifts starting at 5:00 a.m.
- Availability on Sundays and Mondays
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Mobility throughout the store during shifts
- Frequent bending, pulling, pushing, crouching, reaching, and twisting
- Handling objects during shifts
- Frequent lifting up to 40 lbs.
