Job description

We are partnered with a nationally recognized, 100% employee-owned engineering consulting firm that is expanding its MEP presence in Richmond, VA. The firm delivers technically complex engineering projects across commercial, institutional, industrial, and public-sector markets, with a strong focus on collaboration, innovation, and long-term employee development.

They are looking for an experienced MEP Team Lead who wants to remain technically involved while taking the next step into leadership, with the opportunity to build, develop, and lead a multidisciplinary engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in MEP consulting engineering who wants greater autonomy, direct involvement in shaping a growing regional practice, and the resources of an established national firm.

What makes this opportunity stand out is the ability to build something of your own rather than stepping into an already established leadership structure.

What You'll Do
  • Build, lead, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, electrical, and structural design.
  • Oversee engineering design and project delivery while maintaining technical involvement.
  • Lead the growth of the Richmond MEP practice through team development, strategic planning, and client relationships.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development to engineers and designers.
  • Collaborate with regional and national leadership to support business development and expand the firm's presence.
  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, resource allocation, and engineering quality.
  • Work alongside architects, engineers, project managers, and clients to deliver complex building systems projects.
  • Help establish the long-term direction, culture, and technical capabilities of the Richmond engineering team.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Strong background in MEP consulting engineering and building systems design.
  • Previous experience leading engineering teams, mentoring engineers, or managing multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical and electrical building systems.
  • Experience managing project delivery, budgets, schedules, and engineering resources.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to develop client relationships and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Interest in building and growing an engineering team while remaining involved in technical project work.
  • Experience supporting business development or expanding an engineering practice is highly desirable.
What's on Offer
  • 100% employee-owned company with long-term financial benefits through an ESOP.
  • Opportunity to build and lead a multidisciplinary MEP team in Richmond.
  • Autonomy to shape the direction and growth of a regional engineering practice.
  • Resources, technical support, and collaboration from a nationally established engineering firm.
  • People-first culture focused on employee development and long-term retention.
  • Long-term leadership progression as the Richmond practice continues to grow.
  • Opportunity to remain technically involved while taking greater ownership of team development and business growth.
  • Competitive salary up to $170,000

For an experienced MEP Engineer or Engineering Manager who enjoys the technical side of design but wants greater influence over people, projects, and the direction of a growing practice, this is an opportunity to take on a leadership role with meaningful autonomy.

Rather than inheriting an established team and structure, you'll have the opportunity to build and develop a team of your own.
