Job summary

Actalent is seeking an experienced MEP Engineer to design and coordinate mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for diverse building projects.

You will prepare schematics, one-line diagrams, and reports while coordinating with an A/E team. The role emphasizes MEP integration, compliance with NEC/ASHRAE, and field verification with occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in one or more MEP trades.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for MEP drawings.
  • Experience designing electrical distribution systems, including grounding, back-up power, and general power distribution.
  • Experience in lighting design and control for building projects.
  • Experience designing fire alarm and lightning protection systems.
  • Mechanical design experience, including HVAC system design.
  • Experience in plumbing and fire protection design for building projects.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC and its application in electrical design.
  • Experience with coordinating MEP in an A/E firm environment.
  • Proficiency with Revit for MEP modeling and coordination.
  • EIT or PE credential.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards for mechanical and HVAC design.

Responsibilities

  • Design MEP systems for healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings.
  • Prepare schematics, one-line diagrams, contract documents and technical reports.
  • Develop electrical distribution systems, including grounding and back‑up power.
  • Design lighting systems and controls with energy efficiency in mind.
  • Design fire alarm and lightning protection per applicable codes.
  • Perform HVAC design including load calculations and equipment selection.
  • Coordinate MEP elements within architectural and structural constraints.
  • Use AutoCAD and Revit to produce accurate, coordinated drawings and models.
  • Apply NEC and ASHRAE standards in the design and review of systems.
  • Collaborate with project teams in an A/E firm environment.
  • Support documentation for certifications and regulatory compliance.
  • Travel to job sites to support design coordination and field verification.

Job Description

The MEP Engineer designs and coordinates mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for a variety of building projects, including healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings. This role prepares detailed design documents and reports, applies industry codes and standards, and collaborates within an A/E firm environment on complex building projects with opportunities for professional growth and partnership.

Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for building projects such as healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings.
  • Prepare schematics, one-line diagrams, contract documents, and technical reports that clearly communicate design intent and system requirements.
  • Develop electrical distribution systems, including grounding, back-up power, and general power distribution for a wide range of project types.
  • Design lighting systems and controls, ensuring appropriate illumination levels, energy efficiency, and alignment with project specifications.
  • Design fire alarm and lightning protection systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform mechanical design for HVAC systems, including load calculations, equipment selection, and layout coordination.
  • Contribute to building design by coordinating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing elements within architectural and structural constraints.
  • Use AutoCAD and Revit to produce accurate and coordinated drawings and models for MEP systems.
  • Apply NEC and ASHRAE standards in the design and review of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with project teams in an A/E firm environment to ensure integrated and efficient building systems.

Essential Skills

Work Environment

This role is based onsite in New York, with work occurring primarily in office settings and occasional travel to job sites. Mechanical and electrical candidates with 5+ years of experience can work out of the New York City office. The firm maintains offices in New York City and Long Island, both located in convenient areas, including walking distance from public transit such as the LIRR for the Long Island headquarters. The environment is that of an A/E firm where engineers typically enjoy a collaborative, professional atmosphere, working with AutoCAD, Revit, and other design tools on a variety of project types. The culture includes regular social outings and team-building activities such as fishing trips, trivia nights, happy hours, bowling nights, and a company softball team. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of NY, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.
