Job summary

West Virginia Department of Education seeks mentors for Marshall County Schools to support beginning teachers in the 2026-2027 school year. Location is Central Elementary, with the mentor working under the Principal and Personnel Director.

The position requires WV teacher certification, at least five years of experience, and completion of mentor training. A $60.00 per month stipend ($600 yearly) is offered by the State, with monthly reporting obligations.

Qualifications

  • Valid West Virginia teacher certification and currently employed as a full-time teacher in the Marshall County Schools.
  • Mentor must have completed the WVDE mentor training already or enroll in and complete the next training.
  • Teachers at the same school teaching the same or similar subject and grade level will be given preference.
  • At least five years of teaching experience.
  • In-field Master's Degree preferred.
  • Excellent evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Interest in assisting teachers new to the profession.
  • Ability to assist beginning teachers through a supervisory rather than evaluative approach.
  • Ability to keep confidentiality standards.
  • Willingness to attend staff development sessions for mentors.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-conference discussion, observation and post-conference discussion with assigned new teacher.
  • Provide classroom assistance to the beginning teacher in the delivery of his/her instructional program.
  • Assist the beginning teacher in acquiring materials and other resources.
  • Attend all staff development sessions and complete necessary assignments for mentor teachers.
  • Establish a constructive beginning teacher-mentor relationship designed to enhance communication and exchange of ideas.
  • Keep the principal informed of interventions with the assigned beginning teacher without betraying confidentiality.
  • Assist the beginning teacher in planning, preparing, and conducting classroom instruction.
  • Observe, analyze and provide feedback on the beginning teacher's delivery of his/her instructional program.
  • Advise the beginning teacher on strategies to maintain effective classroom management.
  • Assist the beginning teacher in developing methods to appropriately evaluate student progress.
  • Use the supervisory techniques necessary to improve the beginning teacher's delivery methods.
  • Discuss and put into practice techniques and/or strategies to improve areas of need.
  • Identify professional development opportunities that will enhance the beginning teacher's subject area knowledge.
  • Disseminate information about and encourage the beginning teacher's attendance at workshops, seminars, staff development training and other educational offerings.
  • Monthly reports must be submitted to the county office within the month that the meeting was held. Failure to submit timely reports can disqualify mentors from future mentor positions.

POSITION 27P12 TITLE:

Mentor - defined as an experienced educator who advises, assists, and coaches a mentee (a beginning teacher). Elementary Education.
